Don't know if this is in all the gazillion pages of the melamine thread, so thought I would post it separately.

Melamine detected in Chinese pumpkin buns
Daily Yomiuri Online (Japan) October 31, 2008

The Yomiuri Shimbun
The toxic substance melamine has been detected in China-made pumpkin steam buns, buffet restaurant operator Nilax Inc. said Wednesday.
A spokesman from the Musashino, Tokyo-based company, which is a subsidiary of major chain restaurant operator Skylark Co., said it detected 41 parts per million of melamine in the buns that were sold at Buffet Grand China, one of the firm's Chinese restaurants.
According to the spokesman, the pumpkin buns were made in Guangdong Province, by Jin Cheng Frozen Food Co., and imported by The Best Food Creators Co., a company based in Ota Ward, Tokyo, that also supplies pizza dough to Saizeriya Co.--a family restaurant chain operator whose pizza was recently found to be contaminated with melamine.

Are they substituting melamine for the flour instead? As more and more things are discovered to be loaded with melamine they are dough based now. There is an article on here about using tons of melamine to make the cheap flour look whiter and nicer so it can be sold for a good price but 70 tons (guessing on that from the article by trudy) are added to the flour so is that how it is being found in all the bread (flour) based food? Would that mean all the food has the possibility of showing melamine in it along with the animals being fed the melafeed too? Is the whole food supply contaminated over there with melamine?

Man, it's looking more and more like a good time to go low-carb.   Undecided

I think the melamine could be in the leavening agent (ammonium bicarbonate or powdered baking ammonia), the flour, the milk (or powdered
milk or milk protein concentrate), the pumpkin itself from pesticides, the eggs or egg products, the butter, or each and all of them based on the ingredients described in the melamine China food thread listed on page 79.
Must be how it got up to 41 ppm of melamine content. Wonder how the US FDA would classify that exposure if it were looking at similar bakery products in the US? But of course it's not because the US FDA is only looking at "milk" products.

Well, fish, veggies and eggs are out. I'm sure if we check pork, turkey, and beef along with fruits, we're pretty much screwed on what to make for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Go local people and know your growers! Heh, our last CSA pickup is this Sat  Sad  but at least they need an extra hand so here's hoping I get a bit more to put away for the winter. I work for safe food!   Grin Grin
