Almost bought some street meat at the hot dog stand outside the Home Depot where I was looking for garden lights. Uh oh. It's hard to resist eating cwap.

Fortunately, the cats and dogs eat better, although the dogs would not say no to hot dog.

I guess all you have to do is scape off the fungus that ate the listeria -- yuk. Hope
we're both around next year, Shibadiva.

City law firm starts new listeriosis suit

"I think some of the firms involved were also involved in the tainted pet food (lawsuit)," he explained. "I think that process was a year and a half. So we're hopeful it won't be an overly lengthy process."

The reason I bumped this thread up is not to advertise for Canadian law firms. The good news is look at the timeline here:
Recall by manufacturer: August 2008
Lawsuits: August and September 2008

What has changed as a result of the pet food recalls of 2007 is there is now a flock, a gaggle, a very large group of lawyers
armed, trained, and waiting for the next food industry mistake, and willing to sue on behalf of consumers. Not exactly
the news we were all hoping for, true reform of the food industry, but what seems to have happened.

Enough lawsuits by enough consumers, and maybe some of the things so dearly wished for in terms of food safety can happen,
but it's a long legal precedent war.

It's not just Maple Leaf Foods either. In related news, there have been findings of listeria in Ontario and Quebec cheese. I guess more listeria will be coming out of the woodwork too. It's everywhere (unlike, hopefully, melamine or whatever it really was...)

Hence more lawyers will be coming out of the woodwork.

I agree. Food safety basics up front would be preferable.

Being the cynic that I am always wonder is anyone purposely putting this stuff on foods in order to push for the other nasties they want to spray/induce/rub on or use other means so we'll be safe? I belive on the Mike Adams health site he had an article that stated there are only 2,600 cases of listeria in a year across the whole country. So this rush to put a fungus on the deli foods just amazes me. With only 2,600 cases out of 300 million plus people?? I know its bad if anyone falls ill from the foods but no need to introduce something no one knows what it may do to you once its inside of you IMO.

I tend to think it's everywhere. Certainly, my own kitchen habits aren't exemplary, especially when it comes to the handling of raw chicken. (That might be salmonella, but you get the point).

I would be very surprised if Maple Leaf Foods would be into purposely contaminating their products. This is hardly the same thing as putting antibacterial fungus on meat.

Maybe we should have eaten more dirt as kids.

Supposedly the Listeria came from the meat slicers, they are big machines, and it was deep inside them.  This im sure can happen, with the way staffing is these days, maybe they dont have enough staff, or the staff to care to really do a good job of cleaning and sanitizing and doing their standard operating procedures.  So this may happen in alot of places.
I have seen cases of Listeria in Cheese aswell because some small company was playing around with using unpasturized milk.

Could have been the case here that staff weren't cleaning the machines as thoroughly as they needed too, although the onus should be on management to develop and enforce effective processes.

It's not that hard to get raw milk cheese here. Those of us that love it take a chance, I guess, although there are mitigating processes like testing and aging.

Ivanhoe Cheese obviously missed the mark.
