The blog post by the NY Times asks for mandatory recall power for the FDA and traceability through the food to fork process. But
I wonder where this comment poster got his statistics? Three deaths a day (if true, of course) from Salmonella alone is acceptable attrition?
There ought to be severe criminal penalties as well as heavy civil fines for trading in carelessly processed or incidentally contaminated food,
imported or home-grown. If the government can't handle the inspection process, every producer, importer, distributor, and retailer should
be forced to do the safety testing necessary to prevent death and illness, unless someone has a better idea.

Government statistics show that on average, 3,835 cases of salmonella poisoning occur EVERY DAY in the USA, resulting in about 3 deaths/day. What is unique about the 1,000 cases reported over a several week period, resulting in one(?)reported death. The tomato industry is being pummeled by an assumption that has not yet been supported by facts. Isn’t this some sort over over-reaction to a new strain of salmonella that is less lethal than pre-existing varieties? Why isn’t the same energy expended in pursuing the other thousands of cases per day?

5CatMom: Why not sue the entire food and drug manufacturing and retailing industry for criminal negligence?
If you and I killed provable numbers of U.S. citizens per day, including infants and the elderly, what would happen to us?
It seems to me these industries are killing citizens faster than Iraq. I don't want the victims to be in my family or anyone else's.
There are safety testing measures which can be done which simply aren't because of cost. My patience is just gone at this
double-standard using a failed outbreak recall system and giving immunity to these groups of serial food killers ...

We can only hope that litigation is what brings and end the charade called "food safety" and the huge waste of taxpayer dollars & lives

I wish with all my heart it wasn't true, but food producers/manufacturers/importers/distributors/retailers are
serial food killers at this point in time, with largely immune legal status, not doing even a minimum to prevent the things
they could prevent, and I don't think it should be allowed to remain that way. All our pets were sacrificed to warn
us and heaven knows how many people. How many people die daily from salmonella, e-coli, BSE exposure, and whatever
else you care to name in terms of food and drugs? It's too many. Remember what the Chinese did to their bribe taking
official in 2007? I was horrified. I'm also horrified by what I've learned about the food supply since March 16, 2007.

So my fav online grocer has a sale on all fruits and veggies this week. 25% off!!! I stocked up on organic herbs, scallions, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit. The local berries and plums were already on special so I got a really good deal there! Also had the Atlantic Salmon that I like so much on special. Those big producers can kiss my a**!!!!
