That's very good timing for the FDA . Maybe tomorrow they can explain to Bart Stupack's subcommittee why the traceback took so long. Should be an interesting hearing. http://energycommerce.house.gov/membios/schedule.shtml5CatMom =^..^ =

hmmm . . . seems they got grilled this AM also. I'm going to check the sched and see if I can catch the rerun. "Acheson and other officials were grilled Wednesday at a congressional hearing about why the investigation originally focused on tomatoes." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080730/ap_on_go_ot/salmonella_probeI caught one hearing on a rerun in the middle of the night. It was about toxins in plastic bottles etc. Sen Kerry literally rendered the FDA guy speechless a couple times. It was classic! He was asking if the guy had anything to say and the guy just couldn't respond. Kerry was like "well, I guess that's a no". They should really play these hearings during prime time. M ethinks we would get some "change" then.

Straybaby, They'll likely rerun the hearing during the night, even though it doesn't appear on the schedule right now. C-SPAN's programming seems very subject to change . The last hearing that Bart held was rerun several times on subsequent days. 5CatMom =^..^ =

This source of the water just goes along with what I read on rense.com about mexico using raw, untreated (straight from their toilets) sewage water to water all the fruits and vegetables. Now I wonder was this water also used on organic fruit and vegetables from mexico? Gawd makes me want to hurl big time. Whole Foods now has fruit and stuff from Mexico but I wouldn't buy any of it knowing the raw sewage water thats sprayed on it-YECH, Blech, no thanks. Even if it is put into some kind of misty spray to kill fungus, etc - gawd what remains on the fruit and vegetables? And they are allowed to sell this to the public? or just to america?

5cat,
That's how I usually catch them. Flipping the channels while working in the middle of the night. This one's long though. looked to be well over 3hrs, and that may have just been the second session. Hopefully they'll put a transcript up. I'll catch the AM one with Bart for sure. He's getting to be like an old friend, lol!~
JJ,
Today's hearing was with the House Horticulture and Organic Agriculture Subcommittee. The word Organic really raised my eyebrows. I need to look up the committee and see what they cover and why the FDA was there. Grilling them on the latest recall mess could have been a side issue or used to point out just more of their incompetence.

There's a "gentleman" on C-SPAN's Washington Journal right now talking about this, and he's getting hammered. LOL, the look on his face is priceless.
Representative Tim Murphy, from PA, 18th District.

gawd the FDA is incompetent! They didn't even find the Jalepeno clue. It was Minnesota and their track back system and it only took them 3 days through track back after they had a cluster outbreak. When the outbreak started, only FLA and Mexico were in active production and Fla has trackback as do some areas of Mexico. CA didn't become active until a month later and they also have track back. Took them 5 hrs to run a track back for Subway on tomatoes. Turns out many large buyers require track back or they won't buy your product. How [edited] incompetent do you have to be to not figure out the contaminated produce and where it came from?! Oh, and they are inspecting less than one percent of the produce coming in over the border. You would THINK they would have stepped that up in April. I mean really now, that's so freakin' obvious it's ridiculous. Instead they went out and cleared tomatoes in states that weren't even producing tomatoes when this who thing started. I think I'll get a lobotomy and apply for a job with the FDA. LOL!~ David A just said tomatoes were safe, yet one of the farms that grew/is growing tainted peppers ALSO grows tomatoes. Did the tomatoes get special water?! And it's still not clear if the FDA knows everyone that is using the tainted water source(s). Would anyone like some fresh salsa?!

Straybaby,
How are you watching the hearing?
Did you hear the former FDA guy from the first panel say that FDA found animals tracking through the fields (or irrigation ditches - I didn't quite catch it) on one of the farms?
Anyway, so far it sounds like the problem originated with contaminated irrigation water, but FDA has yet to determine how many farms were affected because they don't know how many farms use water from the contaminated source.

Keep the reports coming for those of us with dialup. I am really enjoying the commentary! Within the last few weeks, all my alert subscriptions to FDA notices, USDA notices, FSIS notices have disappeared from my ISP in-box. My ISP says it ain't them ... lol http://restaurantlaw.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/dearth-of-border-inspections-gets-attention/DEARTH OF BORDER INSPECTIONS GETS ATTENTION July 29, 2008 ยท No Comments There is so much food coming in to the U.S. from Mexico that food-safety inspectors spend less than a minute inspecting each truck at many border crossings. Now that Mexico has been established as the source of salmonella saintpaul, that critical lapse is getting more and more attention, as it should be.Why even bother with a one minute inspection per truckload?
