Grocery Manufacturers Association Vice President Robert Brackett chided both the Bush administration and Congress for not giving the Food and Drug Administration more funding to inspect food safety at company plants.

"Because FDA food-related funding has not kept pace with inflation, more than 800 scientists, inspectors and other critical staff have been lost in the past four years," said Brackett, who served as director the agency's food safety director until last year.

In an unusual move for an industry spokesman, Brackett also urged Congress to give FDA the authority to order a company to recall tainted food if the company doesn't volunteer. Currently the agency works with producers to organize voluntary recalls.

oh, the irony . . .  .

" The association's members include ConAgra Foods Inc. (CAG), Kraft Foods Inc. ( KFT) and Nestle USA Inc., a unit of Nestla SA (NSRGY)."

That is strange.  What is wrong with that picture?  He goes from the FDA to the GMA...then wants its members inspected more and mandatory recalls ordered on them?  Mmmm...

I just hope they are paying their fair share of taxes to pay for all this.  We just learned today that in WA state, corporations are getting so many property tax breaks that residential homeowners are paying 75% more taxes than they would if corporations paid their own property taxes.  Ours just went up another $400.

They sure have the scams.

yeah, i thought it was kinda strange also, but maybe the bulk of the grocers is a larger vote than the big guys? that could happen since so few control so much of the supply, they may have screwed a large percentage of the members over the past year. or he's just too informed on the problem?

wow! that's a big tax problem there! can you guys fix that?!

I filed an appeal months ago.  I have to check and see what is going on.  I won't go into all that here. I have a whole rant thread on that.

I'd love for you to come out here and clean up this place.  The tax assessor lives in a plush waterfront villa with a view of the Seattle city lights backed by the snow-capped Cascade mountain range.  He can watch eagles soar and hear the seals bark...blah.  And his home was 200K under Zillow along with his elite neighbors.  He had us 25K over Zillow.  (Worse now.)  He says that the fancy waterfront homes are too difficult to assess but once every 6 years, so they slide awhile.  Nice how that works?  If I don't have enough data this year, I will next year.

god, you just described the most beautiful living situation! my friend's sister just bought a place there and it sounds like it may be in the same area or something similar. she didn't just buy it for herself, but bought it because she has dogs and just wanted to be there with them Cheesy of course we got a huge laugh over it because it was a spontaneous buy, and we both would prob do the same! lol!~  Grin

Thanks, straybaby, for the link. It's certainly important that retailers are
recognizing that consumers are not happy with the food safety situation,
even if ironic who some of those retailers are.
