FDA finds salmonella strain in jalapeno pepper

WASHINGTON - Government inspectors finally have a big clue in the nationwide salmonella outbreak: They found the same bacteria on a single Mexican-grown jalapeno pepper handled by a small Texas produce shipper.

But Monday's discovery doesn't solve the mystery: Authorities don't know where the pepper became tainted — on the farm, or in the plant in McAllen, Texas, or at some stop in between.

Nor are they saying the tainted pepper exonerates tomatoes sold earlier in the spring that consumers until last week had been told were the prime suspect.

Well, miracles do happen.

Anyone know if the North Carolina folks told them where to find it?

It Was The Peppers (Maybe)
This is getting to be like a detective who-done-it. The cops focus attention on a suspect, but in the end, have to let him go for lack of evidence. Meanwhile, the real culprit continues to lurk out there, until finally evidence turns up linking him to the crime. But the police are still reluctant to admit they were wrong about the first guy.

Even so, the FDA now says the recall of jalapeño peppers by Agricola Zaragoza, Inc. of McAllen, Texas, might explain how more than 1,200 consumers were sickened by the Salmonella germ, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune system. But the case is still a little think. The FDA says the germ was found on a single pepper, and they have no idea how, or where, it was contaminated.

I can't wait to see what other produce they find with Salmonella in it.  Every day is like Christmas morning with the FDA!

We really need the CSI. I don't think the FDA will ever figure it out.
