I've joined several raw feeder groups ... thing with many members of such groups is their intolerance of other modalities of feeding... the prey model ones especially will bash you if you have been feeding ground raw beyond what they think is the apprpriate transition time... and heaven help you if you *still* feed a bit of commercial cat food on the side! ha ha ha ha ha... some of these people will tell you something like, "just toss the cat a wing and be done with it!" ... and, I am kind of a precision-buff, so I used to have a gazzillion questions and they get very short with me - made me feel like I was an absolute idiot for even wanting to measure nutrients... since their cats are doing fabulously by the way they talk, perhaps they are right afterall and I am a fool for wanting to measure every teeny weeny bit of something... ha ha ha ha ha Stil, I like to read and lurk and see what's going on.

That's what I like about the people here. Everybody is helpful and tolerant. People are willing to share their opinion while recognizing the other person needs to find what will work for them.

Well I tried to join that group and was banned after one post since I didn't conform to the dictatorial list of things I was supposed to believe (some of which were wrong) at the outset. But I didn't even see that list, so bad is the interface, until after I posted. What I did see were a lot of confused people trying to learn about raw, but thinking they could do raw pork for cats (no no no no very bad idea).... I use www.catnutrition.org recipe and they allowed me in knowing that...then terminated me because of the salmon oil supplementation in that formula. I still did get a few emails from people wanting info so at least my blog post got through before I was banned.

Yes, some of those raw feeders really have pushy attitudes, don't they? convinced that their way is the only way?

I haven't looked at that group on Yahoo but found the people on k9kitchen, k9kidney and k9nutrition to be really helpful. Big number of people on those lists are raw feeders but some do feed commercial and understand not everyone can feed raw or home cooked. It is interesting to lurk on these lists, I've found some good ideas for feeding my dog and information about supplements, etc.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to address a couple of items.
First, real short (since this is the dog forum); cats all over the world eat raw pork just fine, some even eat it exclusively. If you live in a still developing country, there might be some issues, but commercial pork from the US, Canada, a few EU countries and Australia is safe. In fact, if you live in Australia, your peace of mind should be even greater; they have never had a problem with trichinosis. Trichinosis parasites die if frozen for three weeks, so even in the countries where it's common, it can be addressed.
Secondly; I, too, have encountered the sometimes incredible aggressiveness of some raw food feeders. It can be very off-putting indeed.
I can only surmise that sometimes people are so blown away by how much healthier their animals become once taken off of commercial foods (most especially dry foods) that their previous acceptance of said commercial foods gets ripped off to leave behind a shiny hurting burn of guilt that (unless they consciously recognize and accept it) hardens to become the aggressive proselytizing of their current method of feeding.
I know that was a crazy long sentence, but I've been thinking about this a lot. I've felt the guilt, and the need to expiate it by "converting" people. It can be a really strong compulsion - and the more one loves their pets, the deeper the need; I can imagine the loss of a previous beloved pet while on commercial foods would seriously exacerbate these feelings.
I'm not excusing folks who do this - their pushiness is rude and the holier-than-thou attitude is obnoxious, no doubt about it - but I think I can understand how they fall into this behavior.

I joined one of those groups when I was trying to get my guys to raw, but I mostly found that people weren't very helpful or had a bit of an attitude (certainly some were very kind and helpful, of course), but the vibe was enough to make me stop logging in.

It really is unfortunate that many raw-feeder yahoo groups have become very intolerant of other modalities of feeding. It isn't only the raw-feeding groups, but other groups as well revolving on pet health and care. Usually, such groups start very well and then comes one or two very dominant personalities that kind of "take over" the group and their opinion is always "gospel truth," brooking no contrary opinions. Sadly, one very very good CRF group has slowly become one of these 'intolerants.' It is still good to lurk and read what's going on now and again.

With the lurking - similar to always a brides maid and never a bride. I would want to participate but not if I had to salute each time before making a post and making sure it was within their standards of allowances. Sheesh, don't think I'd like that at all.

I agree Cato, I saw a similar thing a long time ago in an IBD group. Thank goodness that Itchmo has not become like that! And the Hyper-T yahoo group has also remained very welcoming of questions and opinions even though there are a couple of truly knowledgeable people there from whom I received invaluable information.
