1  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Pet Behavior & Training / Re: How often do you clean your litter boxes? on: August 30, 2008, 12:55:06 PM
We discovered with our automatic box that the waste chamber could be lined very handily with those ubiquitous plastic shopping bags that every store wants to put your purchases in.  Even cheaper, if they will fit for your box!

Thanks catbird!  I usually buy the most inexpensive brand I can find for the bags since they really aren't holding any uhm, major 'loads." I'll give the grocery bags a try at the next changing.  A lot of stores in my area use paper bags now to help reduce the plastic though so I don't get as many freebies anymore!

I have 3 kitties, and was previously in a 1 BR 850 SF apt. I only had space for one box, and I used clumping litter and you better believe I scooped that puppy at least 4 x day (it was a rolling type litter box, so literally you could tip it, pull out the drawer with clumps and I was using World's Best litter so into the toilet it went)! I'm pretty neurotic about keeping the apt from smelling like pets, and also if I were a cat, I wouldn't want to go into a messy box either!  I cleaned out the box top to bottom probably once every 4 weeks.

However, I caved and bought a Litter Robot about 6 months ago and it's been working great for me, but it does require clumping litter also.  Even though I am in a bigger apt now, I find the one litter box is fine; it cleans itself 7 mins after the last 'visit' so the box is always clean for the next cat.  I line the waste drawer with kitchen garbage bags, and change out the bag every 2-3 days.  A big improvement over the the 8-12 scoops I would have done manually!  I clean this out top to bottom about 1x month too.

Just wanted to report back in on this..

I've added this to the rotation (wellness, evo, tj's) of canned food for my 3 cats, and have not seen any adverse affects. They seem to like the taste - it's the only one my youngest will eat regularly (he prefers the free feed kibble) so he'll take it or leave it with the canned food oftentimes.

I have tried the Ocean Fish, Turkey and Chicken formulas, as well as the Tuna for Cats over the last few weeks with paws up for all 3.

Picked up 1 can each (5.5 oz) of the Salmon, Tuna, Chicken, Beef, Turkey to supplement their other food. All 3 of my cats are usually on a rotation of 2x/day feedings of canned Wellness grain free, EVO, Trader Joes, w/Tiki Cat for treats sometimes.  Dry feed a mix of EVO and Natural Balance Limited ingredients Duck and Green Pea.

Beef and Turkey: 1 y.o. ate it all (typical), 9 m.o. ate the other brand of food in the bowl but left the b.g., 3 y.o. picked at it but didn't finish it.

Chicken & Tuna: 1 y.o. ate it all (typical), 9 m.o. scratched around the bowl like he was trying to cover poo and refused it  Shocked and the 3 y.o. picked at it but didn't finish it.

Salmon was the only one that all 3 would eat.  Given the cost, and limited availability (it's not stocked by my local store), I will probably not be adding this to their rotation.

No adverse affects (throwing up or the other end) from the food.  They just didn't like the taste for the most part!

Decided to try a few cans of the new Before Grains on the recommendation of my local pet food store.  My youngest cat (9 mos) won't touch it...he just sniffs it and then scratches around the dish like he's trying to bury in the litter box.

The other cans are going back to the store!

My 3 kitties (age 3, 1 and 9 mos) all do great on the dry. I mix 50 - 66% Evo to 33 - 50% Natural Balance duck and green pea.  Coats are shinier after a few weeks, and they are more energetic and slim down vs. when I feed them other kibbles.

Also, the size is large enough that they have to chew the pieces, and can't snarf it down so fast that they throw up.

The original Evo canned food (for cats and kittens) is always a hit.  They don't like the 95% meat versions though (Turkey, Beef, etc).

Tried these on my 3 cats, who used to love the Friskies chunky sliced/shredded food w/ gravy before I switched them off as soon as I started to learn more about cat foods!

No adverse affects, but only 1 will eat it; the other two just like the gravy and leave all the chunks/pieces behind.

Thanks to everyone for the welcomes!  I am very glad to have found this forum with so much great information!

I didn't realize TJ's used Menu foods, but as you said, it does look like they were very responsive and cautionary, and pulled the products during the recall even though they weren't directly affected.

The ingredients for all of the varieties look pretty solid, and comparable to some of the other premium brands with no by-products or gluten etc.  Good to hear that no one has had a negative experience thus far.   Smiley

Does anyone have experience with Trader Joe's canned or dry cat food?

I saw 3 varieties of premium canned flavors, and a Tuna for Cats along with 2 flavors of kibble at the store.

Thanks!
