The reason I took some of these are so some people can see that a tornado rips, shreds, and tears things, not blows them. Hope no one is getting tired of seeing these? Thanks Grin

I blame the Gov for all of this. If We had the money and jobs this wouldn't be happening.

PETS are now paying the price of soaring household costs with a surge in the number of dogs and cats being abandoned at animal shelters.

Many pets are given away by owners who say they have had to make a choice between paying rising interest rates, petrol and grocery bills or keeping their pets, according to the Animal Welfare League.
The squeeze on family budgets has seen 3832 dogs and 6147 cats surrendered to the league in the past six months.

This is a 33 per cent increase in dogs and 6 per cent in cats compared with the same six months last year.

League media officer Hannah Wooller said the influx of animals was putting a strain on the organisation's finances.

"The number of abandoned pets is higher than ever before," she said.

"We believe it's due to the increased cost of living and people are finding it harder and harder to afford a family pet."

The cost of owning a dog was about $500 a year, Ms Wooller said.

"And that's not counting vet bills, which could run into the thousands, and other unplanned expenses such as boarding your pet if you are away from home, etc," she said.

Animal care manager Issy Scarfo said she had spoken to several people who had handed over their pets due to financial hardship.

"We have people coming in who say they can't afford to have an animal any more, others who can't pay the mortgage and have to start renting homes which don't allow pets, and some who can't pay their rent and have been evicted," Ms Issy said.

Hahndorf Interim Animal Shelter in the Adelaide Hills said it was also experiencing a surge in abandoned pets.

Publicity officer Sue Whelan said there had been an increase of about 30 per cent in dogs surrendered or picked up as strays.

The shelter is currently caring for 33 dogs, about 80 cats and 15 kittens.

"There seems to be an increasing trend where people see pets as disposable items and are letting them go to meet rising living costs," Ms Whelan said.

"We are finding a lot more strays because people are just walking away from their pets."

Both organisations have urged people to consider the long-term commitments necessary to look after a pet before committing themselves.

Ms Wooller said too many people were not properly prepared for such commitments and were indulging in impulse buying.

"There is a financial commitment and time commitment to keeping a pet," she said.

"People should make sure they understand and are ready to meet these responsibilities before becoming a pet owner."

Compounding the influx of abandoned pets has been Adelaide's relatively warm weather, which the organisations said had extended the cat breeding season and seen a continual inflow of kittens.

Both organisations said donations would be welcome to help them cope with the increasing numbers of pets in their care.

I wanted to send this to all you Mothers. If you're like Me i've been there and done that- And i'm still doing it Grin
It will bring back memories Roll Eyes

Mothers

This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Mayer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, 'It's okay honey, Mommy's here.'

Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying babies who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their blouses and diapers in their purse.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And all the mothers who DON'T.

This for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see. And the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes.

This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections are hanging on their refrigerator doors.

And for all the mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at football or socc er games instead of watching from the warmth of their cars.

And that when their kids asked, 'Did you see me, Mom?' they could say, 'Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world,' and mean it.

This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery store and swat them in despair when they stomp their feet and scream for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who count to ten instead, but realize how child abuse happens.

This is for all the mothers who go hungry, so their children can eat.

For all the mothers who read 'Goodnight, Moon' twice a night for a year. And then read it again. 'Jus t one more time.'

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a little voice calls 'Mom?' in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home -- or even away at college ~or have their own families.

This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school with stomach aches, assuring them they'd be just FINE once they got there, o nly to get calls from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up. Right away.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can't find the words to reach them.

For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their 14 year olds dye their hair green.

For all the mothers of the victims of recent school shootings, and the mothers of those who did the shooting.

For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who just came home from school, safely.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful, and now pray they come home safely from a war.

What makes a good Mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips?

The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time?

Or is it in her heart?

Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time?

The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 A.M. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby?

The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 A.M. when you just want to h ear their key in the door and know they are safe again in your home?

Or the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation... And mature mothers learning to let go.

For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers.< /SPAN>

Single mothers and married mothers.

Mothers with money, mothers without.

This is for you all. For all of us...

Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them. And pray and never stop being a mom..

Please pass along to all the Mo ms in your life.

'Home is what catches you when you fall - and we all fall.'

Please pass this to a wonderful mother or mother figure you know.

(I just did!)

Oh, I know about the CCC camps. My mother and Grandmother used to talk about them. Because at least it gave people a job. so they wouldn't starve, and didn't have any Gov handouts.
We have some of those camps in Maine still. My DH and his friends all called them- the old mans camp. So maybe when this was over, the older people stayed in them?
I always thought it was a good idea to put the people to work. On the roads and other things they did.
And We talking about why don't they do something like that again, and put people to work?
Back then they had a lot of pride too, so they really wanted to work. But I know some who would probably want to work today, too.

I don't know what the answer would be. when we moved here My dog became heartworm positive. that's before i knew about living in the south. She was treated and was fine. But I don't know if cutting back would work? The vet would know Grin

DMS, What a scarey thing to go through. I'm so glad Your daughter is alright.
I have been reading a lot about what is making us so sick. And i do believe a lot of it has to do with pesticides.
Right now, i have a lot of problems going on with my health. the Drs. can't figure it out. i am probably loaded with toxins.

Bless you for this for Her and the kittens. It is very hard, but I think you did a great job.
Thanks so much for taking care of Her.
1229  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Veterinary and Medications / Re: Interceptor-HW prevention-dose advice on: May 09, 2008, 04:37:41 PM
I wouldn't give this unless i had a test first. If the dog has heart worm, this could kill . You have to make sure the dog is heartworm neg. first.
1230  Other/Misc / Off Topic (No Politics) / Re: Terrible tornados on: May 09, 2008, 11:28:14 AM
Catbird, thank You so much for caring. And you were right.
I got up early and it got darker and darker. Then we had 3 real warnings within the hour. One said Trap, that's the end of my road, the other 2 said Harrellsville. so, i spent most of the morning in the hall.
At least 2 did touch down. One was huge. One is up the road and one is down the road and over a little. there may be more. they're still trying to figure it all out.
And We have more storms coming late this afternoon.
I took a few pictures of a couple of things. I can't get on one road, but don't know if i want to. the big chicken houses got hit right on. so, there were dead chickens everywhere. And i couldn't tell if a house was included or not, it looked like it.
Right now, i'm just checking in Cheesy and then i'm laying down for a few. This wipes Me out emotionally.
Last night one hit near the Charlotte area, killing a truck driver and ingering a few others. So far, I haven't heard of anyone getting hurt right here.
But i was terrified.
I'll try to show you all some pictures later. One you just won't believe. And if it's not raining when My husband gets home, i'm going onto that closed road, one way or another. The chickens should be cleaned up by then.
I am so touched that You noticed I was missing, and that We did indeed have tornados.  Kiss
