Remote islands filled with California foxes? My kind of story

As a reporter who's covered the environment for more than 20 years, I am always on the lookout for feel-good stories. They are hard to find.

Here's one. On the Channel Islands of California, biologists for the National Parks Service and other agencies have saved an endangered species, the island fox, in a mere decade. The foxes' numbers dwindled to roughly 100 ten years ago. Now there are 650 foxes and the numbers are steadily increasing.

Fizzy, you are right Arlo is gone.
Straybaby, looks like he was a moderator

well I hope it wasn't my humor . . .  he was here as of the 29th, but I see he is showing up as a guest now. And that is from a message that was sent prior to him becoming a guest.

Wow, I missed his size. I heard the cause of death. Man, if a 6'5" 270 guy doesn't have a chance . . .

My friends feel the same way about crowds as I do. The outer edge is a nice place to be.  I'm small, so I always get pushed aside. And that includes at the museum!! I have to feel comfortable with a crowd before I'll get into it. Mr. Damour weighed 2.5Xs as much as me.

Hopefully this will be a lesson for retailers and shoppers.

He's a moderator right? I think they are old posts that show up as "guest", and newer with moderator under his name?

7  Other/Misc / Off Topic (No Politics) / Re: Dangers of food irradiation. on: December 01, 2008, 08:20:14 PM
Labeling is KEY. The food manufacturers would LOVE for us not to know what's been zapped. Keep you ears peeled about labeling laws. This could end up like the milk hormone label issue. And we win. If they have to label and we won't buy food with the label, all the irradiation plants can shut down or be used for something besides our food.

3cat, you need some muscle. Contact your local Representative, your Senator, your Attorney General's office, Gov, Mayor and every freakin' news station.

If they are going to feed us this crap, they damn well better open up resources for getting help.

Have you tried UC Davis?

10  Other/Misc / Off Topic (No Politics) / Re: Is the Chicken you Eat Poisened With Arsenic? on: December 01, 2008, 01:43:46 PM
Tesla, I think the arsenic is organic, not that it can be in an organic chicken. It's still a toxin, whether organic or not. Which means it shouldn't be classified as organic (for our purposes) even though it's an organic substance.

FDA Reports Significant Progress in Protecting the Food Supply

Unbelievable  Shocked Shocked Have they forgotten about the tomato/pepper/whatever spring? And did they not just test a slew of infant formula to confirm that yes, mothers are feeding their infants melamine?!  {head meet desk}

free range organic poultry is the right color. More in the white neutral with pinkish/flesh tones.  Just your basic white chicks, lol!~   Grin

Thanks Mandycat! My mind was drawing a complete blank  Tongue

sweet tasting and causes acute deadly renal failure.

Might as well do a PSA: watch out for anti-freeze along curbs, driveways and parking lots. Pets like it just like children do. Even if they don't seem to ingest much, waste no time getting to the vet. If you find a spill, kitty litter or sand will absorb a lot of it so you can shovel it up. Also rags laid on top to absorb it. I then post a sign by the spot. Don't know what else to do about cleaning the residue. You can always call city services where you live.

Purdue has an ingredient in their feed to get that "golden" color. It's a "normal" ingredient that grows, but I can't remember what it is.
