1  Pet Food Info (Menu Foods, Iams, Purina, Hills, Ol'Roy, etc.) / Your Problems with Pet Food / Hubby and I are now avoiding ALL Science Diet on: May 18, 2007, 10:25:03 AM
Hi there,
I was asked to post this here in hopes of helping someone else.

For several months, one of our cats, Missy, has been urinating on the floor near the litter box. Not daily, but enough to worry us. When we took her to the vet we found out that her urine was diluted and her BUN & Creatinine (sp?) levels were just above the normal range. We also had her sister’s (Gypsy) blood checked and that’s OK. OK, she and her sister are 12 but this didn’t sit right with me. In addition, they’d both lost weight for no reason.

For over several months now Gypsy has refused to eat her "special  treats" -- canned cat food. We'd give it a couple of times a week,  only about a teaspoon at a time. The rest was dry food. I was confused about this, especially since Gypsy would move Heaven and Earth to get to the special treats. Suddenly, she's turning it away. OK, we thought she was sick of it or something. Then I realized/felt that she thought it was "off" for some reason -- perhaps spoiled?  OK, new can, new flavor, same response. Meanwhile, Missy is eating  this stuff like anything (then again, Missy eats broccoli!). We were feeding them Science Diet (both occasional wet treats and dry daily) but  not the stuff on the recall list. Also we'd been noticing that Missy has been urinating a lot on the bathroom floor, usually the day after the special treats were given.

Fast forward to early this week. I got another one of my "funny feelings" that since we'd stopped giving special treats (the wet food), Missy   hasn't been urinating on the floor. Hmmm. OK, yesterday we were   getting our weekly pizza at Whole Foods ($8 for a 16" pizza on  Wednesdays) and we decided to try some wet organic cat food. BOTH cats ate it like they hadn't eaten in weeks. HUH??? OK, they'd both  lost weight but HUH??? Could the OTHER Science Diet stuff also have   stuff in it that either hasn't been discovered or has been suppressed? I've worked for the govn't (OK, quasi-govn't) long  enough to know this kind of suppression happens so I wasn't going to take any chances. We went out again and purchased some dry  organic food (both $2 and $8 versions) and they ate it like they  hadn't eaten in weeks. HUH!?!?!?!? OK, they like the $8 version better, but that's because they are their mother's daughters (sort of, don't worry, I haven't lost a full grip on reality yet).

Today, both cats seem perkier, especially Gypsy. Missy is her usual  self but then again, except for the urination issue, we didn't see  any changes in her cat-onality. She no longer urinates on the bathroom floor. I don't know what's going on, but   we're going to keep feeding them this new stuff and pray for the  best. We'll recheck the blood work in 2 weeks and see  where we are. We'll also re-weigh the girls and hopefully will see   an increase in their weights -- especially Gypsy (she's 6 lbs and fully grown!).

So that's the big story. We're hopeful that we've caught this in time. We're ESPECIALLY grateful that Gypsy is a very picky eater  because otherwise, we wouldn't have been the wiser. OK, so she likes McDonald's burger too -- no one's perfect.

Please pay attention to ALL signs in your animals. This is really nasty and scarry stuff.

Oh, and we did try cooking their food or going the raw route and they wouldn't have any part of it.

Paula
