31  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Memorials and Support / Re: To All Who've Lost a Beloved Pet: Till Then on: May 28, 2008, 01:12:38 PM
That was very moving.  Of course I was crying the whole time I was watching it....  It's heartbreaking to lose our furkids but I believe we'll be reunited with them again one day, so that thought helps.

Good article.  I tend to agree and feel like we are headed into one of those sci fi movies.  I have my own water supply and plenty acreage to grow things in, if need be.  My ancestors didn't have all the modern day comforts that I have and, if I had to, I could survive living a "back to basics" lifestyle.

My list of products I would need thus far:

toilet paper
light bulbs
peroxide
baking soda
batteries for flashlight and radio
some kind of soap
asprin
cat food
dog food

I asked my husband what products he couldn't do without and he said toothpaste and beef jerky.   Roll Eyes

I started this thread 4 days ago when our local Citgo hit $4.03/g.  Today (4 days later) we are at $4.11/g.  (And that is not the highest in our area - it's just the particular station where we buy our gas.)
41  General Pet Information / Misc/Other Pet Discussions / Re: How to get the darn birds to come visit? on: May 26, 2008, 11:59:39 AM
I feed wildbirds year round but my feeders hang in trees, so I'm not sure what you'd have to do when you're on the 5th floor.  Usually if you keep seed out, eventually a bird will come along and then tell all of his friends!!!  Can you put some flowers on your balcony?  Something with a red flower might get you some action.

Patricia, You are so right about toilet paper, and things like that. when hurricane Isabel hit here, we hadn't stocked up. So many trees were down, and no power in town, they wouldn't let the trucks come up from Raliegh. So, no food in the stores, [they had to throw it all out because of no power. And no trucks coming in, I know a little of what can happen. and it was horrible. So now I know some things that you just have to have. and we had no power for 14 days.
If things get real bad, it will be a lot longer than that.
It's so scarey to go to town [when We finally could] and see no traffic lights, no lights in stores, nothing.

That's the situation I am anticipating - hoping it won't get that bad, but I want to be prepared.  My hubby and I are making a list of things we would have a hard time living without if there was some kind of shortage.  (Of course, toilet paper is #1 on both of our lists!)

It brings up an interesting question - what things can't you live without?
44  Other/Misc / Off Topic (No Politics) / Re: Truckers Shutdown: May 1 & 5 - Support for American Citizens Needed on: May 23, 2008, 05:50:00 PM
Just catching up on this thread.......  I think it's been an interesting discussion and view it as "a way of life" thread rather than a political one.  I don't think anyone's personal politics will matter when the shelves in our grocery stores collect dust because there aren't enough products to put on there.  That will be the great equalizer and we will all be in the same boat - without the products we depend on every single day.

I'm not sure I understand the part of the thread about trucks in upstate NY.  I live in upstate NY and trucks have always used primary roads like route 20 and route 30, but they don't use secondary roads (like the road I live on.)  If they took all these back roads instead of the main ones, they would never finish their route!   Wink

We can use our stimulus checks to stock up on pet food and toilet paper!!!!!!!

That was a joke - sort of.....   Roll Eyes

I don't know what will happen but we are cutting back on everything and stocking up what we can, just in case.
