.... Notice all the Republicans at the convention? Heck, a Republican gave the nominating speech for Obama! ....
If the Republicans that have made the switch are of the caliber of former Rep. Leach, this could be a good thing.
http://itchmoforums.com/offtopic-politics/rebel-republican-gives-obama-backing-on-wall-st-t6074.0.htmlI noticed Marketwatch comments about him indicate his ethics are respected, even by those that want no regulations at all in the financial arena. (Just taxpayer bailouts of failed institutions.)
I think that decent prominent Republicans are switching to Obama because they see the Democrats as the only hope to save a system of managed capitalism. The Republican party is too influenced by extremists now, and regulated capitalism is not a good fit with Libertarian ideology either. (Much as I like the party's limited interventionist foreign policy.)
I don't see Republicans as all bad nor women as all good. (Not saying you, do, either.) An example:
http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2001/05/19/state_department/"Yet despite this jerk in foreign policy by the new administration, one thing has changed drastically for the better at State -- under Powell, morale has increased dramatically. Since he took over, say many at State, the closed-door snobbery that prevailed under Albright has given way to a feeling that the leadership is open to the views and expertise of its staff, and is no longer a closed group of people shut off from Foreign Service professionals. "http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/sep/30/usa.afghanistan"'What's the point of having this superb military you're always talking about if we can't use it?' Madeleine Albright screamed at Colin Powell. Her stinging rebuke could not have been better designed to scrape a raw American nerve, challenging the nation's machismo and role as leader of the free word. Powell reacted furiously. 'I thought I would have an aneurysm,' he recalled. 'American GIs are not toy soldiers to be moved around on some global game board' "Overall, I think the Powell doctrine has been proven right, especially when it comes to conserving American lives and resources. So Colin Powell would be welcome in the Democratic party, IMO. Same thing with any ethical Republicans that are homeless and seeking to at least buy the country some time.
The RNC trying to package themselves as the women's party now...well, good luck on that.
