Great article, Hobo.  Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

"Major automakers all have set up factories in China, which overtook Japan last year to become the world's No. 2 vehicle market after the United States. But until now, production has focused on meeting booming local demand. "

Another nail in our coffin.  Guess our current vehicles will have to really last as I certainly don't want to knowingly drive a car/truck with Chinese components.

pfr, good luck with natura. You can see why we are paranoid, when people like PAtkins start writing here, makes us wonder who is who and why they are here.

db Undecided

db, I think somebody invited PAtkins over here to post, can't remember who.  Saw a post yesterday that the person had called there and asked somebody to post a response on Itchmo.

Luckily, I haven't seen any problems with the EVO dry or canned for my cats or dogs, but am holding off on them now until this is cleared up.  They had only been on them since April.  Cats are almost done with their first case of EVO.  EVO is grain-free.  Don't know if that has anything to do with it.  Dogs are back on TWO and cats on Wellness and my one stubborn senior kitty on Fancy Feast gluten-free for the time being.

Petslave, Thank you so much.  That's one of the foods I want to try, too.

So, for y'all with multiple pet households, what do you do for vacation?

Vacation.  What's that?  Can't afford one anymore.

Would not put my dogs in a kennel ever again.  Bad experience, painful to even think about it.  However, a pet sitter for the cats in the past has worked out quite well.  So, would look into a pet sitter if we ever could afford a vacation again.

Justme- I make both cat & dog homemade.1 cat is 18 lbs & 1 is 12 lbs. Dogs are 13 lbs,25 lbs & 85 lbs. I make large stockpots at a time & measure it out by a days worth into freezer bags or containers. The 12 lb cat gets 2 Tbsp [rounded spoonfuls] twice a day.The 18 lb cat gets 1/2 Tbsp more at each meal. I add a little sw potato,br rice or oatmeal, flax seed or bulgar. A little carrot or gr beans & a little cranberry or apple or pear. I use lamb, chicken, turkey or salmon, herring, clam or sardine. Also a few scrambled eggs. My cats like it pureed. I cook everything lightly.A lb of salmon with a little fiber & a few veg & fruit will make a weeks worth of meals for your cat.
The dogs like the same but also spinach, squash & peas. I don't puree theirs. They really like meatloaf. I cook it & dice it.For all 3 dogs I use 3 cups 2x a day.$ lbs of gr meat plus the other ingredients will make 5 meals. I do add more of the fiber, fruit & veg for the dogs. Without it they were having loose stools. Maybe because they add so much grainy crap before these recalls began.
Lesliek,
Wow, thanks so much for your information.  This gives me a starting point.  Do you add cat or dog vitamins or other supplements to the food?  How long have you been feeding homemade to your pets?

db,
I don't think I could feed raw to my dogs either, too many fangs would appear, I'm sure.   Grin

What problems did KD have with canned food in the past?

We must be the exception here.  I had no trouble transitioning my cats to mostly wet food, but they used to get some canned at least once a week as a treat.  I feed them twice a day, so in the morning when they seem the hungriest that's when I give them anything new they are trying.

I have no tips for you as far as your husband.  My DH doesn't really get into it either, although he loves all our animals dearly.  I think he thinks I know what I'm doing and leaves it at that.   Huh  He doesn't discourage my food choices for them.  Nah, he doesn't really listen about all the recall details.  In one ear and out the other.  Doesn't like me "lecturing" people about it.  LOL.  Can't help myself.
3923  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Help With My Sick Pet / Re: My cat has little lumps on: July 02, 2007, 07:07:20 PM
Grin Hey, my cat Ruby saw the vet today. She was so stoic but I could tell she was really horrified. She is always so popular at the vet because she just goes all limp and lets them do their job. Unlike my cat Gracie who trys to scratch and hisses and growls at them.

Anyway, Ruby has a clean bill of health!! YAY!!!!!!
The lumps I was feeling were her intestines and because she gets constipated I could feel her poopies inside her. Shocked
Neither the vet or I could feel any lumps today.
Ruby started purring during the lump check because it was like the best massage ever!!

Oh and my vet was totally amazed at how clean her teeth are. Never cleaned ever but spic and span anyway. She said that it must be good genes. Both of her fangs had little chips on them. Nothing bad though. I think she chews on stuff (the little brat).
I am very happy!!

The other cool thing is that I told my vet that I was feeding Wellness to my CRF kitty and told her how much better she's eating now and my vet was all for it. Whatever works is what she said to do.
KimS,
Whew,  good news for you and your girl.  Glad Ruby is OK.   Smiley
3924  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Making Your Own Pet Food And Home Remedies / How much ingredients needed for dog or cat food? on: July 02, 2007, 01:36:12 PM
Could someone who is home cooking pet food give me an idea how much ingredients I would need, like how much meat, to feed a 10 pound cat  and/or a 60 pound dog for one day?  Just wondering what I would be getting into.  This is for cooking.  I don't want to feed raw food.

Thanks for any information.

Hope she is okay.  First thing I check when I come to this site is to see if she has posted.

Very good numbers for grainless foods; thanks! Never thought I'd be able to feed KD anything without grains. Smiley  I'm not thrilled about the garlic and cranberries, but hopefully the amounts are too small to do any harm.

JustMe: where did you get the phosphorus numbers? I'd love to check out the rest of their formulas and see which ones will work for her.

petslave: Yeah, no kidding about the Evo. All of the Natura canned formulas are high in phosphorus. And now it looks like their dry food might be a concern as well - scary for me since I use California Natural and always thought it was safe.  Undecided
Orange Fuzzball,
You're welcome.

I recently emailed Wellness and they sent me a whole list of ingredient information/percentages.  They have always answered my questions within 24 hours or less.  Very responsive.  Make sure you specifically ask for the DMB figures if that is what you need.  They have a form right on the web site to email them.

I'm watching the EVO posts, too, as I'm feeding canned to my cats right now.  The dogs occasionally get EVO dry.

Does anyone know if it is true that the Wellness Turkey and Chicken canned formulas are low in phosphorus? The various lists and charts online are out of date, but I had heard these formulas are OK. I've been staying away because of the Menu connection, but I'd like an alternative to Felidae canned for variety.
Chicken:  1.15 DMB
Turkey:  1.05 DMB

Genny,

I don't blame Nixon for being a little "grumpy".  Who wouldn't with a catheter in place.   Grin

I love his name.  Is he related to former prez, "Tricky Dick"?

I hope he does well and continues to enjoy his food.

My male cat who had a catheter for a few days when he had struvite crystals has never sat with the same posture since.  Kind of sits lopsided now.

My Lucy (who I posted her biopsies were benign, is on Itchmo Reader pix today---this was her last "float" before surgery and that is what is making her the most uncomfortable---she can't get on her boogie-board.  She will hold on for as long as I let her---she absolutely loves it!!  Harry is deathly afraid of water (and bird feathers) and he call himself a golden retriever!!! Cheesy Grin
Carol

ps--how are the other recoveries doing???
Carol, Lucy is a beautiful girl.

And the cat pix on the same page of Lorie's Topaz and Geisha and Evelyn's Batman (all recall survivors) are beautiful, too.
