Thanks for all of your suggestions about Wally's condition. I am thinking it is allergies too. I have been very careful about enviromental factors because I had a Siamese baby that suffered from horrible breathing problems. I would never allow smoking in my house and only have wood fires if our power is out and we need the heat. I cannot think of anything new in the way of cleaning materials, etc, but will keep it in my mind. I have my furnace system completely cleaned every year. I am leaning toward food allergies, since the antibiotics don't seem to be making a big improvement. One day I think he is getting much better and then he has a really bad day. I will certainly give a total grain free diet a try. Thanks for all of your imput.

I am sorry I have been out of the loop for a while. I wanted to let all of you know that GG had her one month check-up today. All of her enzyme levels have returned to normal. Hurrah!! Better yet, when I had my Wally boy in for a vet visit I heard the vet telling a client that she is no longer renewing metacam prescriptions for cats. My vet also graciously agreeded not to charge me for GG's treatment for renal failure. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and information. If you had not let me know about metacam, who knows what might have happened. Now maybe someone out there will have an idea of what is wrong with my Wally. He is a 2 yr old orange neutered male cat, indoor only. He has developed a terrible wheeze and violent bouts of sneezing. His temp, blood work, chest x-ray are all normal. Antibiotics and predinisone treatments have not been successful. An x-ray of his nasal passages shows cloudyness on both sides. The vet does not believe it is a growth of any kind. The vet now has him on a super antibiotic. I have not noticed any improvement yet, but we still have a week to go. In the mean time I am trying to eliminate any corn from my cat food since having learned that many cats have allergies to corn. I am anxious to hear if any of you out there have any ideas of what else I might try, since you have been such a great help in the past. I hope you know how greatful I am to all of you.

Happy News!! GG was able to come home tonight. Her enzyme levels are almost normal. Other then a fever she is doing well. We are pretty sure the fever is a flare up of her dental problems which she was being treated for with the metacam. It is not unlikely that the stress of her illness would allow the inflammation in her gums to advance.
Other good news is that I was able to get her to eat. They had to " force feed" (their term) at the vets. She turned her nose up at the special kidney diet, but did eat some of her Tiki Cat canned food.
The young lady vet that was treating GG for her problem has been convinced that metacam was the problem. Next week I meet with the vet that prescribed the medication. Hopefully he will be as open to reading up on metacam as his partner.
The vet says GG is not out of the woods yet. Only time will tell if this is acute or chronic renal failure, but at least things are under control for now. I am sure all of the prayers and positive thoughts had as much to do with her recovery as veterinary medicine. I am so very grateful.
I am so glad that this forum has helped get the word out about the dangers of metacam. Apparently many of you were already aware of this problem, but for those of you, like me, who were unaware, please think twice about letting your vet prescribe oral metacam!!

I wanted to update all of you on how my little girl is doing. I spoke with the vet this morning. Although GG is improving she is far from out of the woods. Her enzyme levels have improved slightly, so things are going in the right direction. They want to keep her on fluid therapy for a few more days. My vet has at least been reading up on metacam and is starting to admit that it is likely what caused the renal failure.
Thanks for all of your positive thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for all of the great input. I have been reading up on metacam and it sure sounds like the cause of my kitty's problems. She was receiving oral doses of metacam that were much higher then they should have been. The solution the vet gave me was 1.5mg/ml and the directions were to give her the 10lb amount on the syringe. When I asked my vet about this, I was told that it might have added to the problem, but not caused the problem. After my reading I beg to differ with the vet. It does not help my poor little girl to assign blame, but it is a relief to know it is not something in my house that could poison my other 3 guys.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help and good wishes. I should know tomorrow how thing are looking for my baby's survival.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts and good advice. I am certainly going to check further into the Metacam possibility. I had already spoken to my vet about it possibly being a problem. My kitty is no longer receiving the medication. She is at the vets receiving aggressive treatment for the renal failure. Since she is only 2 years old, I hope her age will work in her favor.

My cat was diagnosed this morning and is at the vets receiving treatment. I am hoping for the best.
I have no new houseplants, and none of my existing houseplants are on the toxic plant list. Because of a recent hip replacement surgery, I have been using a cleaning lady and will check with her tomorrow about any chemicals she may be using around the house. I think this is an unlikely cause since she has been cleaning my mother's house for years and her cats have had no problems, but it doesn't hurt to check.
My kitty is currently on metacam. She had severe stomatitis and had to have most of her teeth removed last year. During her dental checkup on nov 30th she showed some inflammation of the gums and was being treated for that.
I am not aware of any new pet food recalls. My cats currently are fed Weruva, Tiki Cat, Avoderm, Pet Gold Elite and Sheba canned food and Natural Choice, Pinnacle, Royal Canin and Chicken Soup dry food. It is getting so hard to know what is safe for my kitties any more.

I have a 2yr old spayed dsh cat who has suddenly gone into renal failure. The vet said it looks like antifreeze poisoning. She is an indoor only cat and has never been exposed ot antifreeze. I am frantically looking around my house for possible causes of her problem. I also have 3 neutered male cats and do not want them to have the same problem. Does anyone have suggestions?
