2177  General Pet Information / Misc/Other Pet Discussions / Re: RISE IN HUMAN KIDNEY DISEASE on: May 12, 2007, 08:54:52 PM
"PROPYLENE GLYCOL. People this is ANTI-FREEZE."

JJ Sorry Cry I think you mean Ethylene Glycol is anti-freeze. Propylene glycol is used as a food additive, pretty much a thickener. IT IS TOXIC TO CATS but not to humans. It has many uses both food and non-food. This is not to say that I want it in my food but it isn't anti-freeze.

I find it interesting that the rise in kidney disease comes at this time when we are starting to see what happened to our pets. Could we be seeing the cumulative effects of melamine/cyanuric acid? in humans??

The Chinese have been importing food into the US for 17 years now, doesn't the CDC keep track of this??

Maybe this is really a good thing, as unfortunate as it is that all the pets that died and sickened, that we wake up to mass poisonings that have been going on. The more I read about this, the more links that I go to the more I see how bad the food is in China. I read somewhere that some ridiculous number of Chinese people get food poisoning each year, my mind thinks it was 300 million. If you do a google search on china food poisoning, the results are staggering.

Maybe this is what we needed to wake up to the bigger problem. STOP BUYING FOOD FROM THIS COUNTRY. Huh

"I think a consumer strike could have a big impact, but we seem to be cutting spending whether we want to or not, anyway!"

All very good points. One thing to always keep in mind, the inflation rate is not based on what economists call volatile items, which are food and fuel. Why they do this I have no idea. If they factored inflation by adding in those "volatile" items, I am sure it would be at least 10% each year for the last few years. Gasoline alone has doubled in the last 5 years alone. With the loss of so many good paying jobs, it seems like we will have to work 2 jobs to pay the bills. Sad

2179  General Pet Information / Misc/Other Pet Discussions / Re: Wheat Gluten questions on: May 12, 2007, 06:26:26 PM
"Also what is Menhaden fish anyway? " Huh

Menhaden fish are small, nasty, oily, foul smelling fish. They are scavengers and eat algae. They are not used for human consumption, too many small bones. Usually ground up and put in pet food. High protein etc.

As to wheat gluten, it is primarily a thickener and a protein source. Used in many vegetarian dishes as a meat substitute. Now days found in all kinds of products. Wheat gluten is the part left over after washing the wheat starch away. The process is expensive (if done correctly) and most US plants were put out of business when they opened it up to China. Of course we can now see how the Chinese make it so cheaply, just using wheat flour and changing the names.

"Unfortunately at this time it is impossible to produce cans that meet our
quality standards here in the USA- there just isn't a human food plant that
can do it, we searched extensively for over 18 months." Cry Huh

This statement is really hard to take. I guess there aren't any decent human food plants here? I am not really sure what this person is saying though I would not buy any of their food. And yes the letter has grammatical errors, spelling errors etc. Not sure if an adult even wrote it. I can see them wanting to make a good product but the logic falls away quickly with the above statement.
