706  Pet Behavior and Health Questions / Making Your Own Pet Food And Home Remedies / Re: Daisy needs to lose weight. Best method? on: October 03, 2007, 09:30:00 AM
Bridgett-Try raw baby carrots for dog treats & rinsed clams for cat treats. If they like them you can use a little between meals to get the over the hump of not having food down all the time.

Daisy LOVES carrots so that is good.  The cats, however, being cats, are stubborn when it comes to change.  But I will give it a whirl.

 Shocked

Okay, I will cut them all back (3 cats and a dog, my life will be hell) and see what happens.

did you cut back? with what you are feeding, they don't need as much as other commercial foods.

my dog is active and on a raw diet, but i still need to feed her on the low end of the recommended amount. she seems to have stabilized over the years, but i still watch her waist line as it's much easier to not let her gain vs taking it off! some dogs are like humans, they look at food and gain  Wink you can always replace some of the food with green beans so your pup isn't hungry. i think it's generally 25%. canned no salt or frozen work. carrots also.

LOL!  Poor Daisy takes after her Mother!  Embarrassed

Yes, what I am doing is watching how much she eats in one sitting and then giving her only that much the next time I feed her.  So it is usually around 1/2 - 3/4 or a can twice a day but according to the instructions on the cans she should be eating two cans a day (the small cans).  That seems like alot to me for a little dog.

I am so used to free feeding that it is been very hard to remember to pick the food up in the morning too.  Free feeding is a bad habit of mine too! Tongue

I have another question:

I had always heard that dogs require less protein that cats.  My cats Pinnacle has 10% protein min. while Daisy's Evo has 12% min.  That strikes me as kind of strange.  Why the disparity?

I am not adverse to switching them all to homecooked.  The cats may feel differently, but they will get over it.

My sweet, little Daisy (2 1/2 year old doxie/chi X) needs to lose some weight.  She weighs about 17lbs and needs to get down to 12 or so.  To help my cat, Tucker, lose weight the vet recommended putting him on strictly moist cat food because it has less carbs and more protein.  And no more free feeding.

Would the moist food diet work for Daisy too?  Don't worry, although I am not feeding them home cooked meals, they are getting California Natural dry, Pinnacle moist cat food and Evo moist dog food.  Good stuff.

Any other recommendations?

Exercise isn't an issue.  Daisy and I are training for a 5k for http://www.ahanm.org/ scheduled for the first part of November.  We walk a total of 8-9 miles a week.  We are getting exercise.

Many thanks ahead of time! Smiley

Aw, your cats are cute, but Daisy is just plain adorable!

Thanks! Daisy is pretty cute, in my own unbiased opinion. Wink  She is a very sweet little girl but she also takes her guard dog duties very seriously.

These are my fur-kids:

Badness is the oldest at 8 years of age.  She was under a "free kitten" sign.  She is the kind of cat cat-haters point too as the reason why they hate cats, aloof, independent, mistress of her domain.  Everyone moves out of her way, including me.  But at the same time she can be extremely affectionate.  She loves to snoopervize my morning ablutions.

Scrappy is my second oldest at 7 years of age.  She was born under my parents house.  She is fiesty and very playful, typical tortie.  She can play for hours on end.  She has definite opinions on invading cats and dogs into her territory.  HISS! is her favorite word.

Tucker is my youngest kitty and my first official adoptee.  He is 3 years old this spring.  He was a bottle fed baby that I adopted from a local Petsmart.  His favorite thing is getting his head scratched. That and eating.

Daisy is the newest addition to the family (and last).  She was 2 in January.  She is a doxie/chi mix.  Sweetness personified.  She loves to go for walks and be in the sunshine.

But several Blue Buffalo products have been recalled.

It was recalled but it wasn't?Huh

The letter to Howl911 had been sent BEFORE any Blue Buffalo products had been recalled.  So at the time, he was correct.

Oh! okay.  This is all so confusing.  I need to go over the timeline again.

I have been wondering what was happening at Howl911 too.  The webmast, Nikki, was doing such a good job of keeping up-to-date.  I hope everything is alright.

Color me confused but the guy says:

No BLUE products have been implicated in any of the recent recalls, and there is no reliable scientific evidence that even remotely suggests that BLUE products are anything but safe and healthy for pets. For you to suggest otherwise on your web site is defamatory, particularly in light of the current consumer concerns about pet safety.

But several Blue Buffalo products have been recalled.

It was recalled but it wasn't?Huh

I think my Daisy is also a victim of Natural Balance.? She is going to the vet today.? I will let you all know what happens.

What NB foods has your Daisy been eating? Waiting to here what the vet says today...

Daisy ate

.  I don't remember when or how much she had.  But as soon as I found out that Daisy had eaten some, I made an appt. at the vet.  Daisy is acting fine, her appetite, 'business' and energy levels are all normal.  But I had to be sure.  We haven't had any results back from the vet yet but hopefully, we will hear back today.

The guy at the store where I bought the NB was very dismissive of the recall.  He said they had talked the sales rep from NB and had been told that the recall only happened because of the threat of cross-contamination.  None of the NB products tested had been contaminated according to the sales rep.  Yeah right.  Tell that to MDCatOwner and Andrea.

I am sickened by this.  Please, when you get all your info and sources together, please post them.

A group of volunteers from the Cat Blogosphere  at [urlhttp://www.blog.catblogosphere.com/][/url]have compiled a list of cat foods that do not contain vegetable proteins.  Of course, please do your own research and information verification based on this list.  This list is a good reference.
