Other/Misc / Recall (Non-Pet Food) / Re: (Melamine Suspected) Chinese Officials Say Baby Formula Tied to Kidney Stones

I join everyone in condemning the lack of action by the FDA here in this country, and I join in crying for the thousands of Chinese parents who have lost or sickened children whose lives will be shortened and who have already died uncounted in this immoral, unscrupulous scandal involving the most vulnerable babies and infants through the actions of greedy food processors and greedy government officials who were complicit in producing this murderous, poisonous food. Over 7 million Chinese children living below the poverty level; you bet this 300,000 figure is just what is being admitted as affected here and is no where close to real numbers. The real numbers are likely in the millions. Here's a byline Gillian Wong, AP, article in the Houston Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/business/6142360.htmlChina says 300,000 babies sickened by tainted milk By GILLIAN WONG Associated Press Writer © 2008 The Associated Press Dec. 2, 2008, 6:45AM To date, the U.S. government actions seem to indicate the food safety authorities of this country don't mind bringing the same problem on the same scale right into the U.S. food chain. http://itchmoforums.com/recall-nonpet-food/melamine-suspected-chinese-officials-say-baby-formula-tied-to-kidney-stones-t6256.0.html;msg89525;topicseen#msg89525

Hey, Mongo. I have two crf kitties been treating since January 2007 from bad pet food. What tempts mine most are chicken breast well cooked in butter with organic cooked white rice blended in the blender with organic chicken broth, no salt, to kind of a mushy, lickable consistency. Sometimes it works quite well. If you add too much broth and it's too watery, they turn up noses, but most times will eat that even when off their feed or at least will lick at it for a while. Please let us know how your Melody is doing.

Wow, jada, thank you for link:
TOTAL FIRMS
Note that a single firm can be reported under more than one firm category; therefore, the summation of the individual OAI/VAI firm categories will be more than the actual total number of OAI/VAI firms, as presented below.
Number of active firms whose initial inspection has been reported to FDA – 24,065
Number of active firms handling materials prohibited from use in ruminant feed – 7,876 (33% of those active firms inspected)
Of the 7,876 active firms handling prohibited materials, their most recent inspection revealed that:
0 firms (0%) were classified as OAI
121 firms (1.5%) were classified as VAI
If this stuff goes directly into pet food, what are the chances for pet food contamination? Pet food is not considered ruminant feed and would be even more contaminated, wouldn't it?

I got a reply email from Jean Halloran of Consumers Union. Has one of those confidential disclaimers on it. So I can't share.
Got a reply email from Cedars Sinai saying they don't have the capability and in their opinion most hospitals don't to test for melamine crystals in human urine. Also has confidential disclaimer on it.
Contacted Antec Labs to inquire about ability to use microalbuminuria test on human urine sample. Antec is not allowed to test human products by law, so said customer service rep.
Just frustrated as all get out. Want a simple test independently performed and striking out so far.

Offy, it wasn't a good Thanksgiving for several of us. I am very greatful your cats and you are okay. When your home is violated, it does strange things even when you're not there. Please be good to yourself right now, and try and not let it spook you. p.s., I have a .38, gives one some confidence, although I never thought I'd own one.

Posted contact emails to Cedars Sinai and St. Jude's Research Hospital.
Attach a recent picture of Hunter for those of you who would like to associate a face with all those we don't want harmed in the USA.
One last comment on the ceiling flood. Thanksgiving night, before the flood the next day, Smorgi, my chronic renal failure cat, jumped up on top of the wall unit right next to where the water was pooling and howled at the ceiling. I should have known. What wondrous creatures cats are. Even sick they have better sense than their pet guardians. Cat stand, to wall unit top, and howling for a good several minutes. Just amazing how hard she tried to warn considering how bad she's feeling.

Carol, would you and DH like an expense free trip to Sin City? No snow. Drenched sheetrock crumbles pretty easily. But wet insulation was a real surprise. Look out for even small ceiling bubbles! Hunter's more important, as is finding a lab for human urine testing. If he has melamine crystals, then will want to test food, Nestle Product. Was thinking of some place like Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. What do you all think? Or major metropolitan hospital in Southern California, maybe? A teaching and research center like Loma Linda, USC, or UCLA?

Mandycat, rain ended on Thanksgiving. Ceiling collapsed Friday, just in living room. Odd looking at insulation hanging from your ceiling. So no rain predicted. Had continuous desert thunder storms, including one that stayed over my house for almost an hour. Problem is roof has developed a lowered area where the water pools. Never buy a house with a flat roof, never ever, ever, ever. Well, if trouble comes in threes, I should be done for a while. I hope so. This is just stuff, objects. No cats were under it. Wish I could fix the melamine problems. Where did Arlo go? He's such a sweetheart and now a guest

I know you're not going to believe this, folks, my living room ceiling caved in after three days of heavy rain here in my city in the desert. So I've got my hands full picking up sogged gypsum board and popcorn coating, too. I am reading just this thread, and see your ideas on labs and stuff, which I definitely need based on my grandson's health history. So nothing is open this weekend, including roofing contractors. Monday I start on the labs for Hunter, among other things. We're still talking to the urologist, who is skeptical, but not totally unwilling to consider at least preliminary screening for presence of melamine crystals. My posts are going to be very short for the next little while. So please keep following the articles and posting them, since the FDA is not. Thank you, all.

I believe the barcode email is a hoax, Mary Blonde. It has been discussed several times on different Itchmo threads. The bar code identifies the manufacturer, I believe, not the country of origin. Several people, including me, got this email, and upon exploring it, found it does not tell you the country of origin. That would be too easy and too useful to the consumer. If you follow this link and set up an account, the website will identify manufacturer and product for the bar code you input. It's a pricing convenience for retailers, not consumer info on country of origin: http://www.cproductinfo.com/index.asp?Page=112It's also on page 92 of this thread, the research looking into bar codes: http://itchmoforums.com/recall-nonpet-food/melamine-suspected-chinese-officials-say-baby-formula-tied-to-kidney-stones-t6256.0.html;msg99006;topicseen#msg99006

If anyone knows, I need a lab for urianalysis to detect if there are melamine crystals in Hunter's urine. It has to be FDA certified, nationally recognized. Can you help? Could Representative DeLauro help? Please PM me with your thoughts or send an email. Really, really serious about finding a lab of unimpeachable credentials, the best private lab you know of with a university or nationally. Thank you.
