My goodness. Setting ourselves up for one pet food manufacturer/co-packer again it seems.

This acquisition - would that have anything to do with the recent article on TheTruthAboutPetFood site - that a major player would be acquiring another pet food mfr? The article mentioned it would be a 'natural' pet food company though.

Menu Foods rewarded for revival

Mr. Henderson worked diligently to salvage the company after he was forced to order a recall of 60 million cans of pet food across North America in 2007. The food, imported from China and suspected to contain melamine, killed at least 14 pets due to kidney failure and the scandal made headlines across North America.

“It’s a memory I’d just as soon put behind me,” he said to the Financial Post last November. “There were times when you felt very alone during the ordeal.”

You should have been the loving owner of one of the "14" sick or dead pets who had
no idea what was killing them, Mr. Henderson, a##h$l@

And Simmons is likely worse:

Somehow this is maybe a hatched pet food industry deal to solve the co-packer problem
and keep the profits flowing at the cheapest possible cost?

Menu Foods has been sold to Simmons. I know Menu manufactures Wellness--does Simmons manufacture any Wellness? I hope this does not adversely affect the quality -- it is the only food my kitties eat!

Thanks, kittygirl2. I'm going to merge this with yesterday's thread posted by spartycats.

I know Simmons was manufacturing some of the Wellness 12.5 ounce cans of cat food because I purchased them(codes were different than the Wellness cans).  My cats liked the Simmons ones, but haven't seen them locally this year.  American Nutrition also does some of the canning for Wellness.

Why can't they get the numbers right after so many years!

'14 pets' more like 14 thousand but may be as high as 50 thousand!

Good find, Sparty.

Do we know what other brands are made by Simmons?

Well at least they got one thing right.....he was forced to order the recall.  It will be interesting to see if Simmons keeps Henderson in his job.

More on Simmons-

More on rendering operation.

2008 FDA Warning letter re: violating low-acid canning regulations.

It's too bad Henderson et. al. weren't forced to eat the recalled food as we would be well rid of them.

http://www.emporiagazette.com/news/2010/aug/12/indications-point-menu-emporia-plant-remaining-ope/

Emporia Gazette August 12, 2010

"Though nothing concrete has been announced, indications point to few initial changes to the Emporia pet food plant at when Simmons Pet Foods acquires Menu Foods late this year.

"Simmons is not taking direct questions about the future until after the sale is complete, but the company did release a new statement that implied the plant would be kept in business.

"Menu’s corporate office in Canada isn’t aware of what Simmons is planning. But C. Ian Ross, Menu Foods chairman of the board, said Thursday the Emporia office is the most modern of the three plants. "

Well, I think I can see the writing on the wall....headlines will read something like 'Henderson CEO of Menu Foods offered promotion at Simmons due to his invaluable insight into the pet food manufacturing business....Simmons will benefit from his extensive knowledge and compassion displayed towards pets'   Tongue
