Plan to kill feral cats on San Nicolas island criticized06/06/08 15:31:00Related Content

An animal protection group criticized a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to use dogs, padded leg traps and hunters to eradicate as many as 200 wild cats on San Nicolas Island.

The feral cats, which are descended from domestic cats, have taken a toll on seabirds and other endangered species on San Nicolas, which is about 60 miles off the Southern California mainland in the Channel Islands.

The cats have been known to kill the threatened western snowy plover, island night lizard and the endemic deer mouse, as well as compete for scarce food with the threatened native island fox.
Once caught, the cats would either be shot or given a lethal injection.

leg-hold traps?  What are these people?  barbarian neandrethals.   sheesh.  Aren't there laws against using such traps?

 Angry Angry Angry Angry

They must be in colonies.  Why can't they let a TNR group try first.

Sure, get rid of the cats, then what is to stop the endangered fox from eating the endangered mice and plover?  Fox hunting?

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Letter sent. Hopefully they will ask for some help from feral groups & find a better way to deal with the problem.

I also sent my letter . . . there must be a better way. Why is the first "solution" to kill?

Blessings

I don't understand why they don't TNR the cats. BTW I've read that mice will eat the eggs of ground nesting birds.

You know, if they trap the cats, they will be easy for a fox to eat. and that's just so unfair. To trap something and have it killed like that?
These people are morons. I wished i lived closer. this is so insane.
Foxes ate all my chicken eggs, so I know they eat eggs. they ate some of my chickens, too. and they will eat cats. and if the island is over run by this mouse, it will be terrible after the cats are gone.
and the cats didn't ask to be there. Someone put them there.
This is INSANE Roll Eyes

Foxes eat birds too. When we tried getting guinea hens to control the ticks the foxes & raccoons killed & ate them all. I don't understand why TNR won't work,& they could adopt some out also to thin the population.

Please keep writing. And write to TNR too.

"Professional hunters will use non-lead ammunition and the dogs will be used for tracking purposes only"
Then what are going to be in the guns? I'm sure it will hurt real bad.
I still think this is insane. and the Navy is doing it? Nothing against the Navy, but they are used to guns, and other things, some hate cats, ETC.
Please Please Write to anyone and everyone.
