The Daily Pilot February 8, 2011-Steve Dale Pet Column

"Nutritionist Tiffany Bierer, health, sciences and nutrition manager for Mars Petcare U.S., points out that, for example, nearly all vitamins and minerals are imported from China (for human and pet consumption).

"Bierer says, "At Mars, we have people on the ground in China, auditing facilities. All pet food companies can't say that. Also, check the packaging to insure the product is manufactured in the U.S., if that is important to you."

"She adds, "Consumers do have the right to ask these types of question. Nearly all pet food brands include a phone number on the packaging.""

But why is it next-to-impossible for the consumer to call those numbers and get straight answers regarding these and other questions from the manufacturers of pet food?  Huh Huh Huh Huh

I realize the question is rhetorical, but here's my answer:  Because the phone number is there to give the customer a false sense of confidence, that's why!  It's only a sham and has no real meaning.

Can't say I'd have much confidence in Mars' "auditing", since it was their food that killed dogs and cats in Asia in 2004--in what was originally attributed to aflatoxin but later found to be melamine.  Any audit worth the paper it's printed on should have caught that.

Sorry, Mars/Nutro.  You don't fool me. Tongue

Was this announcement/statement supposed to 'endear' people to 'trust' and swing over to 'their' products? Sorry, my dog experienced your products first hand, and, luckily no lasting effects. The foamy bile and runny, yellowy stool - nah, NIMBY.

Just a reminder:

http://web.archive.bibalex.org/web/20071018024856/http://chemnutra.com/who.htm

"ChemNutra imports high-quality nutritional and pharmaceutical chemicals from China to the US. We purchase our inventory from quality-assured manufacturers in China; most of whom we have strong relationships over the past twelve years.  Our US customers are manufacturers of food, pet food, and nutritional ingredients, who want high quality, the best service, and the most competitive prices.

"The principals of ChemNutra have exported large quantities of feed and food ingredients from China to manufacturers in the US and elsewhere worldwide. Annually, our volume exceeds 4,000 tons of Amino Acids and other quality ingredients."

They aren't the only company getting ingredients from China. Would imagine the majority do.  One of the PFCs that sells some organic food does, as well.  Actually used to have it on their site and also confirmed it over the phone.  Have not checked their site recently.

JM agree that majority do get their vitamins/minerals etc. from melaland. Also have talked to an organic PFC and they stated they try the best sources for organic but sometimes it comes from another country.
