My husband and I are both animal lovers, and have found it hard to turn down strays.  Right now we have 3 dogs (one mutt, one rescued pitbull, and one boston terrier), 2 cats (1 russian blue, 1 mystery breed) and 1 chinchilla.  We love our “kids”, but with such a full house, accidents are bound to happen.  We’d love to add to our menagerie, but don’t want our house to end up smelling like a toxic dump.   Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning up these accidents and keeping our house odor-free?  I’ve seen products at Petsmart before, and my vet sells another product at his office.  Has anyone tried either of these, or any other miracle product?  Do they really get rid of the odor/stain?

For general odour remover, I use Stink-Free candles (I'm prone to the butterscotch and the executive aromas).  For basic furniture/carpet odour removal I use Nok Out.  For specific messes I use Nature's Miracle Just For Cats for cat pee, Simple Solutions Stain and Odour remover for dog pee and all other messes (I've used it for poop, vomit, blood, ink and wine).  For really bad carpet issues I pull the carpet up and spray Get The Odor Out on the underpad and the back of the carpet - full strength.  For the bird cages we use Simple Solutions Bird Droppings Remover.

I'm very curious to learn what everyone else uses!

Oh, for general cleaning we have always used just hot water with a touch of bleach or warm water with a touch of Orange-a-Peel.  We don't use chemicals or anything strong because of the special needs critters who can't tolerate much of anything that is too strong or artificial.

For the record, we currently have five dogs, two cats and five parrots in the house.  However, we have topped out at 6 cats + 13 dogs, and 22 cats + 3 dogs (different occasions).  We run a rescue, so these were emergency situations that lasted about a month or so and then tapered down quickly.

One final note - for cat litter we use a pair of kiddie pools in the basement filled with Feline Fresh pine litter.  They're a bit of a challenge to clean, but litter box odour is nonexistent in my home - even when the cats numbered 22.   Wink

Good food all around also keeps the odour under control - as does regular baths for the dogs and showers for the parrots.  We spend a LOT of time cleaning.  But they're worth it.   Grin

Well, the most I've had is five cats, but one of them, being geriatric, went to the washroom on the basement floor and occasionally, carpet and clothing left on the floor.

For general cleaning, I use Pink Solution -- all natural, nice smell. http://www.pinksolution.ca

For accident spots, I haven't found anything better than Out. http://www.outinternational.com

I have a Bissell "Little Green Clean Machine" steamer that I use a bit of carpet cleaner and Out in for tough spots.

I use Swheat Scoop cat litter and find that there is no smell. I have a litter box on the main floor and one in the basement. I never have comments about smell from my dh or mom when she visits.

I had also used the Environmental Air Sponge in the basement when Katey was using the spare room carpet as her litterbox (got rid if the carpet in the end). http://airsponge.net

I also use Out,I find it the least offensive smell of the enzyme cleaners. We have 3 dogs [1 likes to mark since 2007 & 1 occasionally drips urine since 2007] & 2 cats[1 tends to use the carpet when sick or upset] & maybe 1 hermit crab.I also shampoo the carpets a lot, I have a Bissell carpet shampooer. I usually mix the shampoo 1/2&1/2 with out to cut the chemicals.

Ah yes, the carpet shampooer - a necessary evil.   Wink

Bug - we used to use swheat scoop, and you're right about the odor control - much better than clay.  We found that it stuck to the box quite a bit (probably wouldn't be an issue with our kiddie pools, however) and also that it attracted mice and ants.  It is a food, and the pests recognize it as such.  Came home one day, found a whole line of ants going to the litter box - and returning in formation, each with a wee chunk of swheat scoop above their little heads.   Grin  We switched to the pine after that.  lol

I use Nature's Miracle for specific messes and I also have a hand-held cordless steam cleaner. (Bissell Spotlifter, I think it's called.)  I scoop litter boxes 3 or 4 times daily and change the litter when it starts to get even a little bit funky.  Washing out the boxes helps a great deal too.  The litter boxes themselves can start to smell if they are not wiped out and disinfected before putting clean litter in.  I wash pet bedding every week or 2 and I also burn lots of incense!  For the doggies weekly baths would probably help a lot.

I swear by this stuff - "Get Serious" - http://www.getseriousproducts.com/  It is by far the best stain/odour remover I've ever used.

"Get Serious" works well for really old stains too - unlike many other enzymatic cleaners, you can heat it up for an extra boost.  I had great luck with it on a peed on chair.  lol

I don't really like it for carpet though - but if you're taking stains out of clothes, it works great!
