Here's an article (from the Wall Street Journal, no less) regarding cat toilet training...along with a couple of videos.'s_Most_Popular

Interesting article, Janet.  I wonder what happens with senior kitties who can no longer jump.  Guess they would have to revert to a litter box at that point.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

The article missed a couple of points.

1. CityKitty is not heavy duty, it is actually a light plastic which wouldn't work for heavier cats. Litterkwitter is better, but intermediate ring (between red and amber) is a must.

2. One thing that article doesn't mention is the ease of getting samples when needed. Also easy to check pH, etc. with urine dipsticks if there is any need for that. Also very easy to monitor the "output" since they usually call us to flush when they are done.

3. Training works a lot better with a soft padded toilet seat since it is not slippery for them and they feel more relaxed.

As for senior kitties, I've had the stairs built for mine when I renovated the place, to make it easier when they get older. And of course when/if needed, I'll switch back to the litterbox.
