There must be a scent or something. ? Something in a much milder form like this happened awhile ago to a friend's husband who was a diabetic. He did not get to the point of seizure but did go way-too-low sugar in the middle of the night, and the normally sedate cat woke him up by "dancing on his chest" as my friend put it.
I think cats are every bit as smart and capable as dogs for alerting medical conditions!
