Cross posting from Law & Politics about pets:

Eddie's Blog has been updated...

http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/blog/2008/06/02/were_gonna_test_us_some_pet_food

"Anyway, it looks like we'll be testing Iams, Wellness, Hill's Science Diet, Innova, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Purina ONE, and more.

http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/blog/2008/09/16/a_little_update_on_pet_food_testing

"Right now Environmental Working Group's getting preliminary results back from the lab and their smart humans are double checking the results to make sure they're accurate. And they're also doing research on ingredients (kinda like me, but sciency-er) and possible health effects that could be linked to the chemicals they found. "

I received this response to my inquiry about the timeframe of the pet food testing project at EWG:

We're probably in the few months range -- as of now, we're still waiting on
lab results, and then we will need to analyze them and write a full report.

We appreciate your interest, and your patience as well.  You will definitely
know as soon as a report is released.

Regards,

We're going to get the ball rolling by testing 10 kinds of pet food for toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury and chromium

Anyone know why EWG started with heavy metals, as opposed to some other starting-point toxin group, grains or?

My best guess is that some companies don't bother to test for them.

(example Evangers "unless" they "suspect" a problem; AAFCO copper - copper from oxides is not reported on the labels/ingredients)

Its a good question 3Cat....thats where Don would come in handy.  It was my understanding that metal testing isnt that expensive, this was a list that Midwest has at their website but I dont see copper listed so maybe they are testing for more metals?  Maybe LeslieK would have more info as I think she had some food tested for metals at one point, it would be interesting to know the cost of that.......

Heavy Metal Screens
Heavy Metals Screen
Lead (Pb)
Cadmium (Cd)
Arsenic (As)
Antimony (Sb)
 $40.00
Heavy Metals Screen plus Mercury $65.00
Mercury (Hg)
 $40.00

The Evangers was tested at Bodycote Labs,Don did it through PFPSA & I think it was $90 but am not sure I'm remembering correctly. Don't forget that they found too much copper & zinc in the dry Nutro dog also. When I spoke to Remy's internist at U of Pa,she said almost all dry foods & canned foods have too much of all the metals & minerals in them.So much for it doesn't bother most animals huh ? The teaching veterinary hospitals are seeing problems with it & apparently from multiple food brands. That may be why EWG decided to start with these tests. The other problem is finding a lab that will do those tests with low parameters & will work for individuals. The good news is a lot more labs are being asked by people,so hopefully more will start doing them.

Leslie,
The interesting aspect would be if the specific lab being questioned actually does the testing in their lab.  Some labs will state they can test for a substance, but they actually outsource the analysis to another lab for that specific test.

I know, one more question to ask when calling them. But how would we know if they send it out ? They will rewrite the results on their own paperwork anyway.I had thought about calling Teri at Accutrace, she was very open & helpful last year.

When I have contacted labs, most have been very open.  When asked if they tested for "X", most would reply we don't test for it here, but can have the testing done for you.

Very early on in the discovery on my previously purchased brand I asked a private lab that tested for PF companies if they tested for acet.  They responded they did not test for it, but could send it for testing at another lab.

I have sent an e:mail to EWG asking the what the status is on their pet food testing project they started.  I would have thought they would have issued some sort of report by now....either they are very slow or I am very impatient.....or both.   Undecided

Give yourself credit the bureaucracy is unbelievable these days.  No ones in charge, everything gets lost in shuffle, no one can make decisions . . . sheesh

They had said that they were going to release the report in January.

In Feb, I emailed Eddie at PFE & also the Pres. of EWG I got no response at all.

The pets for the environment blog appears neglected too.

History:

OK gang, this is very scary.  Their full report is not out yet but I just received this e:mail from pet food testing they are completed.  This round was for 10 brands of dog food they tested.

Dear Eddie,

Thanks to your support earlier this year, EWG has just completed a dog food testing program, and the results are a must-read.

We tested 10 brands of dog food and found that eight of them showed dangerous levels of fluoride. Many of us grew up thinking that fluoride was good for us, but in high levels it can be very bad for humans and animals, causing brittle bones, bone cancer (a big problem for big dogs), thyroid disruption and changes in behavior.

So what can you do right now to protect your pets? For starters, avoid any pet food containing bone meal.

In January, we'll be releasing the full details of this study. Rest assured, you'll be the first to know about our findings. As always, we'll have practical advice on how to steer clear of products that could be dangerous for you or your pets.

They'd indicated these would be tested before:

"Luckily I have over 2,300 responses to my pet food survey (thanks, guys!), so I know that we should be testing Iams, Wellness, Hill's Science Diet, Innova, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Purina ONE, and more. But EWG researchers asked me a question I couldn't answer:"

"Anyway, it looks like we'll be testing Iams, Wellness, Hill's Science Diet, Innova, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Purina ONE, and more.

"we have had a delay as we have had some difficulties"   "the person who is head of the project is out of the office now so I will email you more info"

so of course I will post here whatever I get...interesting...Me wonders if the difficulties are the PFI???

Carol... Ask what happened to the cat food testing?? It was reading like they only ended up testing dog food... opps.. missed that one Smiley

Thanks for calling them Carol. It's a bit unnerving to have a group collect $16,000.00 =/- and leave the donors in limbo after their "announcement" about fluoride and leaving the cat food testing abandoned...
