I ran across this and thought somebody might be interested.

"A simple, sensitive, and specific method for the detection and quantitation of melamine and cyanuric acid in food matrices has been demonstrated.
 
The method is robust and allows for the analysis of a large number of samples, without degradation in column performance. Additionally, full scan spectra for Q3 are collected in the same chromatographic run using the QED-MS/MS scan function, permitting a library search of the results to eliminate any false positives."

It would be interesting to know who are the customers for such testing, and I bet it's not just PF companies.

I still have 2 cans of Campbell's Beef Broth from the Fall of 2007.  Label says it contains wheat gluten.  Maybe I'll have it tested.

Can't help but wonder if some of the food recalls for E. coli, botulism and salmonella are really for something else.

LOL, but that's just me - a paranoid 'ol bag.

I sure don't think it is unreasonable to wonder.  The FDA has covered up other things in the past.  A co-worker of my husband's went into kidney failure during the recall period.  He did have kidney disease, but that would be the group that would show the effects of low-level contamination.

Not being paranoid at all, 5cat.  I've thought the same about some recalls.

If you ate today, thank a farmer, hopefully a small, local farmer.

Remember the thousands & thousands of pets that died to give US a wake-up call about the safety of ALL food.

If food manufacturers can save money by cheaper protein, it seems reasonable
to me to assume they're also doing it in people food.

If I "recall"  Shocked the tainted wheat gluten and/or rice protein was NOT specifically labeled "not for human consumption" or anything along those lines.  The FDA said something like "We know it only went to pet food".  Which was like, totally reassuring...

Test the soup - if you can (O gosh, I'm on a roll today)  Roll Eyes

ChemNutra contracted with SSC, a Chinese registered export broker, to purchase food grade wheat gluten, according to the indictment. SSC then entered into a separate contract with XAC to supply the wheat gluten it needed to fulfill its contract with ChemNutra.


A test sure can't hurt...

I have some corn dogs made from wheat gluten that I saved in the freezer from 2007.  I'm just a little leery of spending so much money.  Does anyone know what the testing is costing?  I have saved them all this time because I am suspicious.  Plus, we eat them all the time, and swim in cyanuric acid and a little water.
