JustMe and everyone:
Would it be appropriate to post an open comments thread under this forum on the First
Anniversary of the Pet Food Recalls so all could post their thoughts after having gone through the last year,
whether on losing a family pet, protecting a current furkid, what they have learned, what they are still concerned about?

Before you start such a thread, you might want to get some input from members who have posted memorials, depending on what they are comfortable with.  It's fine with me if the majority are comfortable with it.

3cat I was thinking about that too.  Also I wonder if people know about this thread.  I know someone was posting about losing 2 pets on another part of the forum.

Is there a way to alert people of this?

I don't see how they could miss it.  It's a whole section devoted to the memorial.  There is a link to this section in the announcement section. Some people have stated they aren't ready to post here and may never be ready.  We have to respect that.  It's an emotion-charged issue.

On March 16th, I have decided to have my own private memorial.  I will not be visiting the forum nor posting on that day, but instead will reflect on the last 12-18 months and what it has meant to our family.  I'm taking the day off from work and we will spend it with our cats and dogs.  A rare thing for us, as I rarely have a day off from work anymore.

Dispel the cover-up! Thousands & thousands died.

I just could not post on the one-year anniversary of my dog's death last week.  I was on this very page typing a poem about him and just found it much too hard to do.  I was on for probably two hours...  It WAS difficult, and I just could not post.  This mass poisoning was and still is a horror for so many people.  I was unable to find words worthy of a true memorial to my buddy and could not post without wanting to include some scathing words for the murderers in my post.  Instead, I burned a candle for my boy all day.  It's still hard.  And, I will never forget what this industry has done.

I thought I'd let you know why there may not be as many people posting as you'd thought.

I do know, purringfur. It's like leaving a big piece of your heart and forces you to remember the pain. I understand.

Each person has to ask themselves if they can.

The veterinarians have not spoken up, except for Banfield. Even VCA has not had the guts. (Heaven knows what pressures were applied)
The press has not reported the extent of the murder committed. (think lost advertising revenues)
The pet food companies have gone to a great deal of effort to confuse and suppress the numbers of
furkids affected so they can continue to sell crap and make a profit on it.

In the end, you have to ask yourself if you can put aside the pain and speak on behalf of your furkid.
There is absolutely no one else left to do so except the pet parents.
I really do understand, through tears, how difficult it is.

If members so desire, they can send me a message to have their pet(s) included on the list below, to include whether furkid is a dog or cat, whether he/she is waiting at Rainbow Bridge or recuperating or whether he/she ate tainted food and is being continually observed.  You don't need to include his/her name unless you so desire.

All pets in the recall memorials currently posted will be automatically included when I compile the list.

I work at a shelter.  Last Feb, we had several animals returned in ARF.  The people who returned them said we gave them sick pets and wanted their donations and vet bills reimbursed.  Three that we know of (one dog and two cats) were eating recalled food.  The owners brought it in with them.  The dog and one of the cats died.  The other cat is in CRF and we will take care of him for as long as we have to.  Can I put them on your memorial? They didn't have an owner, just volunteers who cared for them.

I just checked and she has not been at Itchmo since early last night.

Arlo, I don't think it's a stupid idea, I think it's a very courageous idea and a heart-felt one.

Arlo,

It would be most appropriate for you to post memorials for your shelter animals here.  A lot of us, if not most, have adopted from shelters over the years.  We have others involved in rescue.  I've wondered how many animals suffered the effects of recalled foods, not only in shelters, but also feral cat colonies.

The sometimes unwanted, forgotten, nameless victims.

Thank you.

Arlo: your story about these poor cats and dogs put tears in my eyes - returned to the shelter becuase they were sick and you guys accused of peddling sick animals.  The poor darlings were poisoned by tainted petfood - were suffering and the final insult to them was to be returned to the shelter becuase they were sick through no fault of theirs or yours.  Its simply heartbreaking.  YES - please put their stories in our pet memorial - I for one would like for them to be REMEMBERED and cherished in ur hearts.

Arlo, such an act of courage and caring on behalf of furkids. There couldn't be any
more appropriate furkids in the memorial than these beloved orphans and victims
of tainted pet food. Thank you for sharing your story and putting them there so
very, very much.

On Sunday, March 16, 2008, we will mark the one-year anniversary of the first announcements of what would become the largest pet food recall in history.  I invite you to join with me in a memorial remembrance of all the pets who have been harmed by commercial pet food, with special thoughts for the victims of the 2007 pet food recalls:

At sunset on March 16 I will light a candle in my home in honor of those pets who were killed and sickened, both those I know about and those I will never hear of.  I will spend time thinking quietly about the victims.  I will spend extra time letting my pets know how much I love them.

When I go to bed for the night, I will snuff out the candle.  I will remember all those beautiful lives that were needlessly snuffed out.  And I will once again commit myself to doing what I can to change the situation, in honor of those who died and those who live.

I invite you to join me on Sunday in lighting a candle at sunset where you live--privately in your own home, with a group, or in a public setting.
