Persephone’s Story:

We had rescued an older stray tomcat that we named Boris.  Boris was so badly beat up from being in fights for so long, that he barely had any ears left and had numerous abscesses on his body and face.  The abscesses on his face were so bad that they had eaten through his cheeks, and he would “drool” through the openings as he purred.

We nursed Boris back to health over the next year and he turned into a big, beautiful ball of fur albeit with lots of scars, but a loving personality and the biggest most grateful eyes you can imagine.

One day we took Boris to the vet in the morning to be groomed for some hair mats and a shampoo.  We left him there thinking we would pick him up in an hour or so.  Then the vet called, and said he was dead.  The vet tech had decided to give him a tranquilizer so she could handle him better, only Boris had just eaten his breakfast before we brought him in.  Boris choked to death on his food after being given the tranquilizer.

We were devastated over the unnecessary loss of such a beautiful animal that we had so lovingly nursed back to health, and one that had a special place in our hearts for putting up a heroic effort to live despite all the infections and sickness he came to us with.  We decided the best memorial to Boris would be to rescue another kitty from the Humane Society immediately and save a life in honor of Boris.

Since Boris was a big orange cat, we looked for a kitty that was similar to Boris to always remind us of him.  We found a kitty at the Human Society and she fit the bill, so in honor of Boris we named her Natasha.  Only there was another kitty in the cage with Natasha, a little grey thing that they said was her daughter.  DH and I decided we couldn’t leave her behind, so we adopted both of them.

Naming the little grey thing Persephone was easy to do (Greek Goddess of Innocence), she was such a young beautiful child of Natasha that would for always change the world for us as we would come to find out many years later.  Every time we came home Persephone would jump up in the air sideways to greet us with joy.  She loved “foot pets”, threw herself down on our bed next to us every night and demanded a belly rub before she would fall asleep.

Then one day I started to feed her the new pouched sliced food and gravy packets of a premium food thinking I was giving her the best care I could.  In a few short days Persephone went from having completely normal renal values to being in complete renal failure.  She spent 3 days in the hospital on heavy fluids and therapy to flush her kidneys of the toxins and we were able to bring her values down to fairly normal.

We brought her home and I started feeding her the same poisonous food again.  Within a couple of days she went into violent convulsions and we knew what we had to do to end her suffering.  It would be months later that we would finally realize the true horrendous reason she had to die such a horrific death at the young age of 11.

Rest in peace, Seffer Head, Mommy and Daddy love you so much and miss you dearly.  We will never forget all that you brought into our lives and how you changed our lives forever.

This is very sad, Nabiya. I hope you find peace.  I thought of another strange coincidence with her name.  Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of Grain.  You will be in my prayers.

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.
