I know this has been discussed for a few foods but I can't find where it was  Sad

So what do you guys think of listing the possible causes of white flecks?

I have just opened two cans of Ziwipeak and both had kind of powdery white flecks throughout entire can (not only on top as one would expect for fat).

So it could be:

1. Fat?

2. Undissolved vit/mineral premix?

Any others?

Great question, alek. Just opened some 12.5 oz cans of Wellness Chicken cat with some white on top.

I had the same concern last year:

http://itchmoforums.com/your-problems-with-pet-food/natures-variety-venison-instinct-white-flecks-t9345.0.html

I did not think it was fat because I thought it would have come to the top during processing, but it was fat. Not saying what you seeing is fat, it could be very fine bone or premix. I found that if I isolated several specks and touched them with a warm pin or nail they melted.

Don't forget the fat I found in the baby food wasn't just on the top either. I could see it against the sides & bottom because it was in a glass jar. It also didn't feel greasy, it felt kind of like jello.White flecks could also be bone.

Thanks everyone, I knew this was discussed before but couldn't remember where.

This is how it looks like:

Haven't tried the melting test, I've just thrown away the can since it didn't look the way Ziwipeak looked before. I guess I'll buy another one and see if it melts. I'll put the whole unopened can in warm water for a long time and then open it, if it is fat, it must melt.

If its fat it should smear when rubbed between your fingers too.

What I saw on the Wellness looked like a swirl of white and rubbed right in with a finger touch. So I don't think
we're talking about the same thing, alek. I tossed the can as I had never seen it before. I do have one more
can from the case and will photograph if I see the same thing.

What you've got in the Zwipeak looks very much like what occurs when I mix in aluminum hydroxide gel powder
as a phosphorous binder. But the powder mixes in and disappears with some effort and a little water added.

alek0, you did not mention what type of meat it is.

If it is Venison or another dense meat then what you see is fairly common from my experience. I have seen it in NV, ZiwiPeak and Addiction.

Let us know what your results are.

I've seen the globules like that in foods with a high fat content, such as beef or duck.

This was Ziwipeak venison, same thing for Venison&fish. I'll get another can to try after I get back from another conf. trip this week, and I'll do warm water soaking of the can to see if fat will dissolve. I guess I'll also get one can of lamb to see if it is the same.
