I can't seem to figure this one out.  The common consensus seems to be that Purina is the owner of PMI Nutrition (including the results of Find Owner Search). However, I read somewhere that it has more recently been sold to MARS, and The Pet Food List notes PMI under the Mars manufacturer.  Is it possible that it is owned by Purina and manufactured by Mars?

Oooh, that's doubtful IMO. Those are HUGE competing companies -- I don't think they'd play nice together. More likely there's a missing piece to that puzzle. I don't know what it is, though.

Can you check the dates of the 2 sites ? Maybe it was sold after it was posted on 1 of them. I thought it was Mars, but don't remember where I read that.
ETA I think it might have been mentioned as a Mars brand in some of the salmonells recalls they had. You could try checking them.

"You are correct that Nestle does not own PMI. The PMI division of Purina was sold to Mars.

"Thanks for letting me know the facts are not clear.

LOL, we're so totally on the same page!  Those were the exact two articles I read (out of several) although I read the original recall document, not the one re-posted at Itchmo.   That recall was in 9/08.   If you type in "Mars PMI Nutrition" in Google, it's just about the only thing that comes up.  Yet if you type in "Purina PMI Nutrition" a LOT comes up, including this page:

http://www.waynet.org/waynet/spotlight/2008/080324-purina.htm

I wish the poster who sad

had cited his source.  Without it it's hard from a research standpoint to take it as fact.

So, does the fact that MARS manufactures PMI mean they own it?  I could try calling PMI today but I don't think they're going to be receptive to disclosing their parent company...but I could try...

If we look at the link re: Purina and PMI:

http://www.waynet.org/waynet/spotlight/2008/080324-purina.htm

we see that PMI's said to be made in IN-

Purina Mills, Inc.
505 North 4th Street
Richmond, IN  47374
(765) 962-9561

But when we look at both of the salmonella recalls involving Red Flannel, which is shown as a PMI brand, that along with other PMI products were made in the Mars Everson, PA plant that's now history.  Purina would hardly be contracting Mars to produce anything for them.

Mars continues to be a secretive company.  Take a look at Sister Joan's Nutri-Bits dog treats.  On the face of the website, you'd believe that Sister Joan contracts Northern Ingredients to make them:

http://www.sisterjoans.com/

"Our friends at Northern Ingredients will take your order from 8 am - 4 pm Central, Monday through Friday."

You don't catch on until you view the pdf re: where the peanut butter for them comes from--am attaching a copy of the file:

http://www.sisterjoans.com/pb_info.pdf

Peanut Butter information link

and there you see the Mars letterhead with an effem (another Mars name) e-mail address.
