By special request from a member, please list companies that refuse to say who supplies their premix.

1.  Natura.
2.  Nature's Variety.
3.  Purina.
4.  Natural Balance.
5.  Wellness.*

*On both the using Trouw list and the refusing to name premix supplier list as different customers stated they have gotten different responses.

So far, per BillyD's post

http://itchmoforums.com/news-recall-related/nutro-recall-2009-cat-food-t8383.0.html;msg123413#msg123413

Natura would not name their supplier when he asked directly.

Nature's Variety emailed me that this was "proprietary information" and is not shared.

This per Carol:
"John at Purina (1-888-catchow) can not give out this info as it is proprietary."

John at Purina (1-888-catchow) can not give out this info as it is proprietary.  I told him I would post this info at a public forum.. Angry I also gave the poor guy (he is just following protocol) an earful about this proprietary cwap...

The Pre Mix formula can be proprietary, patented, or competitive information but a supplier is not I don't know what these companies are trying to hide or are afraid of.

Knowing the paranoia in this type of corporate environment they might even suspect some people are competitors posing as
Pet Owners that wouldn't surprise me the least also. Or investigators or reporters or lawyers posing as pet parents.

When a company "can't tell you" due to confidentialy agreements, and you have asked if Company X is the supplier, then maybe ask them "Would it be correct then to state that you do NOT buy from company X?" and see what happens.

Great question to ask.  In general in Corporate Media Training the main focus of the course was how to protect yourself when people start asking questions. Because you "never know who you can trust". They teach you how to pick out loaded questions and such.

Wellness gets on both lists.  I guess it depends how and whom you ask the questions of as some have gotten confirmation of who supplier is and some haven't.

Okay, I just had a phone conversation with Heather from Wellpets. I asked her permission to post this and she gave a verbal okay. Phone 877.869.2971 ext 5531

She would not say who they got their premix from - proprietary (I'm sure you're shocked about that) which she said meant that it was not generic, but a special recipe just for Wellness. 95% of ingredients are from the US/Canada, 4% from New Zealand, the remainder from Asia (taurine/vitamin C) and Belgium (rice protein). They do contaminant testing before and after processing and retain a sample from every batch for retesting. They use a human food auditor (Cook Thurber) that does quarterly inspections in addition to their own testing.

I suggested that she get this information out so people would understand their protocols because of the recalls (both public and silent) of 2007 and the lack of trust of many of us because of the way those were handled. (I also told her my opinion of the AAFCO . . . )

Apparently some of this information is on their website but she also asked me to contact her again if there were anymore questions or concerns.

RE: Lesliek's postings about Natural Balance (Replies #5 & #6 in this thread):

I recognize DSM as a major supplier of individual vitamins, minerals, etc. to the global premix industry from my post/research on the NUTRO Recall thread.  From what I read the other day, DSM does do some premixing (QualiBlends) for others.

So, a question for Natural Balance may be -- Does Natural Balance buy individual vitamins, minerals & amino acids, etc. and mix them themselves (hence, naming DSM), OR does a premix company (Trouw, DSM, other?) buy the individual ingredients (perhaps from DSM) and do the mixing for them??

There are 4 major suppliers of individual vitamins, minerals, & supplements TO the global premix industry.  DSM is one.

I guess my question is...  Was Kristi from NB naming the source of the vitamins, etc., or was she giving the name of the vitamin premixer or both?

Buy local.  Buy organic.

Here's her exact reply;
Please know that the vitamin/mineral premixes are from DSM Nutritional products. Again, I encourage our customers to view more information regarding our "Buy with Confidence" program on our website at http://www.naturalbalance.net/PetFoodScreening.tpl

That's good to know that Natural Balance answered directly that it does not use Trouw.  Thanks for being persistent in emailing NB, Lesliek.
