Is there a website or book that gives detailed information on the ranks of cats in a household? I'd like to know how to tell the ranks (alpha, beta, omega) of my cats. Most websites only give a little information. Some websites give incorrect information by pet owners who don't truly understand the ranks and the behaviors.

I don't know of any websites or books that give detailed information, but here are a few things I do know, from what I have read and years of observation:

Cat hierarchies are more fluid than with dogs and greatly influenced by territory.  For example, a cat may be dominant in what he/she considers their own territory, but more submissive in another cat's territory.  I have 4 cats currently and could almost draw lines in my house around whose territory is whose!

A cat who is in a more dominant (alpha) position overall, or who is seeking to establish dominance, will frequently choose to lie in "control" positions, like at the entrance to a room or the top of the stairs.  Also, if you feed your cats at the same time and in the same area, watch who eats first and if anyone waits until others are done before starting to eat.  The first eater is generally the "top cat", and one who waits is more at the bottom of the ladder.

Cat politics is an interesting topic.

I know who is #1 cat in my house.  She always sits in the highest position in the room, is first too eat and ALWAYS sleeps on my pillow.  She was that way from the first day I had her as a kitten.  Her name is Badness and it fits.

Tucker is #2 but is trying very hard to take over but Badness won't have any of it.  He sleeps in the middle of the bed and is second to eat.  Every now and then he and Badness get into a swatting fight.  Badness flops over onto the ground and show all four paws ready to go and Tucker leaves.  Many people think when cats roll over like this in a fight it means they are being submissive.  It doesn't.  It means they are ready to ruff and tumble, all 5 sets of weapons ready to go (teeth and claws).

Poor little Scrappy is last.  Sometimes she will sleep in the bed but most of the time she sleeps in the closet.  She eats last or off by herself, away from the tension of Badness and Tucker.

Why do cats always jump on your lap with their claws out?  Especially when you are wearing shorts?
