I am going to ask you all really dumb question.  READY?  Geisha peed again sometime last night on that bed and blankie it is one of the old blankets not a new one, she did not pee on this bed the whole time I was gone, 5 days, and now with me being home  less than 2 days she peed out of the box on  that darn bed.  So here is my question………………… The vet asked me has anything changed in the house recently and I did not think of this till this morning driving to work

About a month ago I started smoking again on the regular basis, and I have noticed that she does not get up on my lap anymore seems to keep her distance and has started this peeing do you think my smelling like smoke is stressing her out?  This morning was my last cigarette, because I said, once I got back from PA and they were all I was done.  I hadn’t smoked on the regular basis in about 3 years.  Someone at work says she maybe able to  smell it coming out of my pores and doesn’t like it.  Can a cat be that sensitive ? HELP

Nutz,

Throw those cigs away!  My Mom died of lung/liver cancer from smoking.  Her doctor had seen SO much cancer in women who smoke.  He said that if a woman smokes, she WILL get cancer - it's just a matter of time.  It scared my Sister so badly that she quit cold turkey!

Hugs,

Lori, I am a pee pee expert having just nursed 4 cats continuously for 3.5 years although it's a title I would rather not have.  In any event, what I have learned through trial and error is that they will continue to pee on the same thing over and over again.  I would wash the bedding in hot water several times trying to get rid of it but with their sensitive little noses they can still pick up the scent and they just think it's another litter box.  I had a very nice down comforter on my bed that one peed on and I washed it I don't know how many times.  As soon as I put it back down, the other one would jump up, go right to the spot, smell it, open the mouth and look right at me.  The only thing I could do is throw away whatever they peed on. Fortunately it was all cat beds and other things that could be thrown away and not furniture or mattresses!  Hope this helps!

I had one left in the pack from my trip home and threw it away this morning.  it is stupid but when I heard my mom had breast cancer I started to smoke to relax,  very dumb.  But they are gone now and I am done, I never have a hard time quitting people can't understand how i can smoke one minute and just quit the next i smoked from age 15 probably to age 35 only about a pack a week but I quit cold turkey with no problem.  The main reason i smoked as long as i did was all the studies on weight gain, which never did happen to me I guess I didn't smoke enough for that to happen.  Hopefully me quitting will also help my Geisha calm down i feel terrible thinking my smoking maybe causing her problems

i know i need to throw the bed away too but i was nervous that she would go on the carpet while i wasout of town,  I just can't believe she did not pee on that stupid bed the whole time i was in PA and peed on it the minute i get home.

Lorie, Im wondering if she is showing you that she's mad you were gone?  Cats can realy get p-o'd about mom going away and leaving them, and then dont act out about until you are home.....just a thought.

Reply #119 mentions a connection between stress and feline cystitis and what Peg did for that.

In reply #110, Kaffe mentions a couple of feline stress remedies.

So maybe that would help if this is related to stress or stress/cystitis.  Kaffe's remedies might help you, too, when you quit smoking again.  Geisha could be worried about that, too.

Lorie- It may be a combination of still smelling the urine & getting back at you for leaving. Try getting a gal or 2 of "out" or "nature's Miracle" & clean everything in the area with that. You can also use it in a carpet shampooer.I don't know if the smell of smoke would do it. I smoke & they won't sit on my lap if I have a cigarette, but have never stayed off when I don't.ps you can add the out to the washing machine also.

I had the same kind of thing happen years ago with a cat , with both pee and poop, when I came home from a week-long vacation.  It seemed to be related to emotional issues and stress.  All the suggestions here are very good ones.  I can't emphasize enough how important it is to get the smell out--it needs to be neutralized by an enzyme (like Nature's Miracle or something similar), or they will keep going back to it, no matter what the original issue was that made them do it.  You have to use a lot to get the smell out--soak it deeply with the product if it's something you can't throw away.

It sounds to Me like she is very glad you are home, or very mad that you left. I think it's because you left. That upset Her life.

These are all great ideas I just watched her try and squat about 20 minutes ago and said GEISHA real load she got off the bed REAL quick I took her down stairs and placed her in the litter box and she peed.  PHEW

I did wash the bed in Nature's Miracle, and she didn't decide to pee on it again the whole 5 days I was gone, she only peed on it when I came home.  UGH  I must be her comfort LOL she knows daddy would kill her.  Just Kidding.

Topaz is asleep on it right now and she doesn't try to pee on it?  Geisha is my little pill.  I am going to re-wash it later today and let it soak.  And just try and work with myangel/devil/diva/princess cat for a while.

I am scared to get rid of the bed for fear she will start to go on the carpet then I will have a problem.

Lorie, the only other thing is if Geisha keeps on with this over the day or so, you might want to consider getting her to the vet just to make sure there isnt something medical going on with her.......

OOPS  sorry Sandi it was on a different thread Miss Geisha was at the vet last Thurday evening before I went home, her urinalysis and BCB were excellent.(262 dollars later I just chalked it up as her 8yr old check up)  HOORAY.  I was very happy she is not ill, but also very sad that knowing this is behavioral.  OUCH.

Oh OK Lorie I missed that.....as usual I always miss stuff!   Roll Eyes  Anyway, thats very good and am glad to hear it wasnt medical related.  Ms Geisha sounds like she might be getting in some major payback to mommie.  But really when you look at that, it just means she really missed you which is actually very sweet.  Although Im sure you arent thinking its very sweet while cleaning up the payback presents.  Just soak her (get it? soak) with tons of love and affection and maybe she will finally forgive you.
