I was at Animal Health Supply again today, buying food and checking shelves. I know that they have pulled all recalled products from their stock as soon as they receive the recall notices from the pet food companies.  I have gone in on numerous occassions, taking the most updated lists of of recalled pet foods/brands.  I have then checked their inventory against my list to make sure none of the recalled products are on their shelves.  This was easy, because this is a very small store that carries only a few brands. I also know that they are pulling all products from a single brand even if only ONE of the actual formulas appeared on a recall list.  For example, not all Natural Balance canned formulas are on the recall list, but they have pulled ALL Natural Balance canned formulas from their shelves.  Now, for a store as small as this one, you can imagine how little they have left to sell.  But it seems that they are putting safety first, and taking extra precautionary meaures. I was just there a few hours ago, and we were discussing the latest recall expansions. I gave one of the guys the itchmo.com info so he can get the latest recall news, in addition to the news he receives directly from pet food company representatives.

Due to the small size of the store and the limited number of brands they sell, it is easy for them to closely monitor recall lists against their stock.  By the way, when I told them I was doing voluntary audits, they welcomed and thanked me.  I certainly didn't get that reception at another store I audited recently....

They are selling only brands that have not been involved in any of the recalls so far, which is saying a lot more than most retailers. Another store I audited last week was selling several formulas of Natual Balance, Chicken Soup and Diamond canned foods that weren't on the recall list.  O.K. - these formulas weren't on the recall list, but other formulas from the same company HAVE been recalled.  Nothing says the retailers have to pull every formula of a recalled brand.  But I know I personally won't feed ANY formula of a brand that has been involved in a recall.  Am I an extremist?  Maybe.  But, when my pets' life and health is involved, then it's better safe than sorry, as far as I'm concerned.

I have no connection with this store, other than the fact that I buy pet food, treats and supplies from them (and a few other local retailers), and that I have now audited them.  With the recalls that are now expanded on almost a daily basis, no one can be certain that ANY store has only safe food on their shelves.  Again, what's safe today may be recalled tomorrow.  However, I am confident that this store is doing their best to stay on top of recalls and currently have no recalled products on their shelves.

Know what you mean, LadyHawke.  I stopped at a Fiesta Mart on 11th Street in Tulsa yesterday to get gas.  While passing the pet food aisle, I noticed a couple of different kinds of cuts & gravy Alpo.  I didn't have my list with me, so I couldn't prove the cans were from the batch numbers to be pulled.  Also went shopping at a local Big Lots - saw lots of Iams cans on the shelf, along with a notice that they had never stocked any of the Iams products involved in the recall.  I wonder WHICH recall they are referring to?  My guess is they don't know anything about the multiple subsequent recalls since the first one in March.  Again, I didn't have my audit list with me. I think I need to start taking that list with me EVERYWHERE.
