It will be seen over China and Russia.  Here is an animated map.

http://www.shadowandsubstance.com/

NASA had a musical preview here:

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html#

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/podcasting/SolarEclipse.html
"On the first of August 2008 a rare and awe-inspiring event will take place, a total solar eclipse.

Skies over Canada, Greenland, Russia, Mongolia, and China will darken, as the sun is completely blocked out by the moon....
.....The August first solar eclipse promises to be a stunning event.

http://sunearthday.gsfc.nasa.gov/2008eclipse/ancienteclipses.php

"In ancient China, astronomical observations were performed, not out of abstract curiosity for the sky, but for the practical purpose of keeping track of the civil calendars based upon lunar and solar cycles. Any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor. The superstitious kings of the Shang dynasty in China (1766 to 1123 BC) used astronomical divination as a guide to politics, economics, culture and even etiquette!

Within the ancient Chinese belief system, not all things celestial were of equal importance. Chinese astronomers spent a great deal of time cataloging the stars and their movements than in predicting the movements of planets. They quickly fell behind the Babylonians in the sophistication of their solar system studies. Because the Chinese sought a life of balance and regularity, planets were interlopers and a reminder of 'life out of balance', unlike the fixed stars. Not surprisingly, the worst event, and a cause for great concern, was the solar eclipse, which they thought was caused by a dragon eating the sun. "

http://www.bibalex.org/eclipse2006/HistoricalObservationsofSolarEclipses.htm
"Eclipses of the Sun are awe-inspiring phenomena. It is no wonder that in many early cultures they were believed to be the end of the world or omens. The word eclipse is of Greek origin meaning "abandonment"."

http://science.qj.net/Total-Solar-Eclipse-will-occur-on-August-1/pg/49/aid/122501
" find it poetic that it will end on China, seeing as the 2008 Olympics will start only days later. Good sign, or bad omen? Oooooh, cosmic scariness. The show will start around 8:30 a.m. Greenwich Meridian Time. Now remember, if you intend to watch that eclipse, read up on safe sun-watching."

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0703/tsemoon_Gartstein_f.jpg

"About the image above:
Astronaut Eileen Collins described her first time seeing a sunrise from a space shuttle. But here’s an even more amazing sight: an eclipse of the sun, by the Earth, as seen from the moon. Graphic artist Hana Gartstein (Haifa, Israel) created this composite illustration. It’s an Apollo 17 image of Earth, surrounded with a red-tinted haze as light from the eclipsed sun streams through our planet’s atmosphere. You can see Earth’s night side, still faintly illuminated by the moon, even as the eclipse takes place. Because Earth’s disk as seen from the moon appears almost four times bigger than the sun’s disk, the faint corona we see surrounding an eclipsed sun would be largely obscured in an eclipse of the sun, seen from the lunar surface."

Here's a web site by a photographer that is in Mongolia right now for the eclipse.  Stunning photos of the place and beautiful people already.  You have to see the see the eagles!

http://www.moonglow.net/eclipse/2008aug1/index.shtml

When he gets his eclipse photos on the site, they should be something.  Here is more of his work from the NASA site:

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080504.html

As for predictions, we'll just hope for the best.

Something to hope for:

http://www.earthview.com/ages/history.htm
"What is probably the most famous eclipse of ancient times ended a five-year war between the Lydians and the Medes. These two Middle Eastern armies were locked in battle when "the day was turned into night." The sight of this total solar eclipse (the date is fixed as May 28, 585 B.C.) was startling enough to cause both nations to stop fighting at once. They agreed to a peace treaty and cemented the bond with a double marriage. The eclipse was predicted by Thales, the celebrated Greek astronomer and philosopher, but the prediction was probably not known to the warring nations."

This site will do a live webcast of the eclipse from from the remote Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China near the Mongolian border.  I think that list I put there is the local times for the webcast.

Well... maybe it will be seen in China.  The darkness may just seem like an ordinary pollution-filled day.

http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2008/07/22/Air_pollution_can_trigger_heart_attack/UPI-64281216762523/

For those who can see it, it should be spectacular and eerie at the same time.

Buy local.  Buy organic.
If you ate today, thank a farmer, hopefully a small, local farmer.

Remember the thousands & thousands of pets that died to give US a wake-up call about the safety of ALL food.

Looks like they got a fantastic show at the Exploratorium's location.  No pollution where they were.  (China is a big country.)  A light cloud cover moved out of the way right before totality.  You can run the video in full screen mode by clicking in the little symbol to the left of the volume control.

NASA does an educational program prior to the eclipse, too.

Fred Bruenjes has some photos posted already from his location in Mongolia:
http://www.moonglow.net/eclipse/2008aug1/index.shtml
"SUCCESS!!!
We had a fantastic view of totality from our lakeside observing site. There were a few puffy clouds on the horizon which gave us a great view of the approaching and receding shadow. Our equipment worked very well...."

Enjoy life a little while you can!  Smiley
