We are under a Tornado Watch until 8 tonite.  Already there has been one big one about 45 minutes north of me with lots of damage and power outages.  And a couple of others also sighted.  I worry about my SIL who is at home alone, near the big one, and is immobile due to MS.  My brother is at work, but should be home with her soon.  I called her after it had passed her town, she was unaware of it, which is a good thing!

Sending prayers and best wishes for the safety of you, your family, and all who are in the area of these storms, Fizzy 1. I have lived in tornado country for 40 years, (sigh). I'm assuming your news stations keep you up on the steps to take for tornado safety? I've posted some links to lists of tips on the "Terrible Tornados Now With Pictures" thread here, in Off Topic. Sorry I don't know how to create those links within Itchmo.

Let us know how things are when you can.

Thanks!  I guess I was so excited I didn't mention where I am...The tornadoes have been north of the Denver area.  I'm in a suburb south of Denver.  I have lived in the Denver area my whole life, so I'm quite familiar with the darn things.  I always get the kitty carriers, flashlights, and radio ready to go to the basement if necessary.  Of course, the cats are totally oblivious Roll Eyes  I do have the TV on and they just apologized to the soaps watchers for interrupting their shows so they can cover the weather and damage.

Just talked to my brother.  No damage at his house, but Major damage a few miles down the road.  Block after block of damaged homes Cry  This is in Windsor CO and also Gilcrest  had damage.  Down the street from my brother's house is a State Farm Insurance headquarters.  It has roof damage.  My SIL quipped "I wonder if they'll have trouble collecting" ;  LOL  The MS has taken everything from her but her sense of humor!

It's just windy at my house, so far, no rain.  But it's still early.  Keeping fingers crossed.

I just heard about this on one of my cat lists.
Take Care, and be very careful. At least you have a basement. I just have a hallway.
I'm so sorry for those who in the way of this.

Glad you have come through OK so far and that you know the safety protocols.

Tornados have now been popping up in places they have never occurred before, so I posted the safety tips for those who have not heard their weather personnel recite them over and over and over again. They do need to do that! Ours stay on whenever there is a warning anywhere in their viewing area and they also apologize for interrupting the shows. Sometimes they run the missed shows late at night so people can record them.

Laughter really is the best medicine. I have a medical condition myself and I do think that joking around, watching comedies, does help.

Do come back on so we know for sure that you are OK!

This is what i just found. I'm sure when Fizzy1 comes back on, he'll have more info.

Tornado rips through N. Colorado; 1 killed

WINDSOR, Colo. - A large tornado tore through several northern Colorado towns on Thursday, flipping over tractor-trailers, ripping roofs off buildings and killing at least one person.

The Weld County coroner's office confirmed one person was killed in the storm, which struck about 50 miles north of Denver. The office declined to provide details about how or where the person was killed.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning just after noon, and The Associated Press began fielding calls about a tornado touchdown soon afterward. The storm moved north-northwestward through or near the towns of Platteville, Milliken, Greeley and Windsor. Television footage showed homes and buildings with roofs missing and farm irrigation equipment crumpled.

Emergency personnel were trying to determine how many people were hurt, and how badly.

"We have every type of injury, broken bones, cuts, bruises, from everything from falling trees to broken glass hitting them," said Jolene Schneider, spokeswoman for the Windsor Fire Department. "Only thing we are trying to figure out now is how many and how severe."

Windsor, a farm town of about 16,000, appeared the hardest hit. Video footage showed a dark gray funnel perhaps a quarter-mile wide near the town with heavy hail and rain. At least one residential neighborhood in Windsor appeared to have suffered heavy damage.

"It passed right over us like a big, white monster," said 87-year-old Windsor resident Thomas Coupe.

Splintered wood, mangled metal and other debris cluttered roads, yards and agricultural fields. About 130 children at a daycare center in Windsor were reported safe after the storm passed through; playground equipment outside the center was damaged.

"My house is gone," said Pete Ambrose, a caretaker at a Weld County campground outside Greeley. "I lost my dog. I lost my cats. I lost my camper. I lost everything."

Windsor resident Liz Meyer, 65, said she heard thunder and hail and rushed with her dog into her basement. Her house wasn't damaged, but a 60-foot tree was uprooted from two blocks away and dumped near her home. "And look. It went into the street instead of into my house," Meyer said.

Parts of Interstate 25, the state's main north-south highway, and state Highway 85, an alternate route, were closed to traffic. The American Red Cross was setting up a shelter at the Windsor Community Center.

Some 60,000 customers lost power in the area, according to XCel energy.

A tornado warning also was issued for an area about 100 miles northeast of Denver, but there were no reported tornadoes. A funnel cloud was spotted near Longmont, about 30 miles north of Denver, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning Thursday afternoon for southeastern Wyoming.

State troopers responded to reports of vehicles turned over on Interstate 80 in Laramie, a dispatcher with the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

On its Web site, the Wyoming Department of Transportation Web posted video showing a tractor trailer on its side and a boat that apparently had been blown off of a flatbed trailer on the interstate.

The Laramie Fire Department said it had received no reports of a tornadoes touching down in the area.

Trudy, thanks for posting that report.  It's pretty much what the news stations are saying also, although I did hear one report that there are now 3 fatalities.  Don't know if that's confirmed yet.  It's always so heartbreaking to watch the footage on TV.  One woman interviewed was crying, she can't find her dog Cry Cry  I have also seen train cars that have been blown over off of the train track, multiple semis blown over on the highways, and a day care center with 130 kids that was damaged but the kids are okay.

They are reporting at least 6 tornadoes so far, but the radar screen keeps showing the possibility of more.  My location is still just under a watch, thankfully.  My house is on the high point of our street, so I am constantly watching the skies.  Usually that makes my cats nervous, running from window to window.  Not today!  Napping is so much more important.  I think I should go take one too!  Thanks all for your concern Kiss

(By the way, Fizzy is a "she"!! Cheesy)

Fizzy1, I am so glad you are OK!  But the stories from Colorado are heartbreaking!  Whenever I see those watches go up, I worry about people I know and talk to here.  It's so, so scary.

We have tornados here in Wisconsin, too, mostly in May and June.  The weather this year was so strange that one occurred in January!  (not near where I live.)  The storm pictures I put on the "Signs of Spring" thread are of a storm that produced a tornado about 30 miles from where I live.  (No one was injured, but  property damage occurred, including a large RV being thrown onto a garage roof.)

Just finished watching the local news.  I was happy to hear that at least one of the shelters is accepting pets.  There are reportedly dozens of animals missing. Cry  Some of the footage showed a decimated house, but 3 adorable kittens were poking their heads out of the foundation rubble.  I'd say they are down to 8 lives today!

The storms have moved on to other states for the day.  Hope they fare better.   I love spring, but Dread the storms.  Stay safe everyone!

Glad your safe Trudy and Fizzy also. Weather has been strange since this past winter. Here in chgo. we had thunderstorms with lighting and hail in the middle of winter. Been here all my life and never remember weather like this. So severe when a tornado hits or earthquake. Is mother nature mad at us for some reason?

Our turn here in WI now for tornado watches--we have one until 2 AM.  We are right now on the back end of a thunderstorm that produced pea-sized hail, and it is nearly sunset.  It's quite dark, but the sky is a glowing Crayola yellow-orange color from west to east--very odd-looking.

And with the sound of the rain and the thunder rumbling off, the catbird is singing in my back yard!   Cheesy  Truly an interesting evening.
