Fantastic flower photos, Klondike!
We had an excessive number of June bugs this year (the large shiny brown beetles that come out at night.) They started in the end of May, and up until the last day or so, there have been mobs of them around lights at night--more than I have ever seen before. I wonder if our large amounts of snow over the winter had anything to do with that. For many years I have associated the sound of their buzzing and bumping against the screens at night with the beginning of summer. I don't like these bugs themselves much, though!
Today I saw the first dragonflies of the season here. I like them much better. Now I know it is really summer.

Today planted a Wedding Veil Astilbe which will bloom every year. When fully mature as far as height the flowers will look like feathery lace when the wind gently blows.

catbird yes they require lots of water but with all the rain mine are getting plenty. Have a lavender one and a pink one that I will transplant out of the containers and into the ground to go along with the Wedding Veil Astilbe. They are quite beautiful.

The Astilbe sounds really pretty. I found photos of it. I just got something that looks a little like it, but can't remember the name now. Hope it makes it. Glad everyone is enjoying the photos. Here is the first peony. The color didn't quite get captured. It is a little more magenta. |

The Peony is beautiful! Love that color. I have white ones, but they have already bloomed and died. I guess they bloom earlier here in Maryland. I love their fragrance.

Glad you liked it! They do have a nice fresh scent. These are a couple of years old. I just saw a bush out walking that must have been a couple of years older. It was awesome!
I've got another that is a soft blush color that should bloom soon. It was touch and go with that one, but it hung in there and looks good this year.
I'm near Seattle, and we had a cool snap, so we are bit late even for us.

Thanks for the peonies, Klondike! We didn't get much chance to enjoy ours, since the storms we had pretty much smashed them. One thing I did notice this year was that where the peonies did survive, the scent was especially strong. It was heavenly last week!
Today the air is full of the scent of clover, both red and white, one of my favorite summer experiences. The scent makes me feel both relaxed and energized at the same time. Clover says "June" to me the way roses do for many people.

The peony photo is beautiful, Klondike!
Right now the gardenia is blooming. There's about thirty blooms so the scent floods the yard. It also comes into the house on the night air. It's intoxicating.
We have been strangely cool, it's a relief but it's a little eerie for June.
Nightly katydid concerts started the night before last - the official first night of summer.

Mandycat, we're casual gardeners (especially me), so I'm not sure what exactly helped our gardenia. DH rooted this one from a twig and stuck it in the ground. Whenever we eat bananas, he places the peels around the plant. That's supposed to be good for roses too. They should really be worked into the soil, he tells me, but he just places them there as he is always so rushed. The plant is now eight feet tall and eight feet wide. I'm guessing it probably should be pruned at times, but we haven't done that either  . I spoke too soon on the heat. Cool spell is over, we are broiling today! |

catwoods - Wow! Eight feet tall and eight feet wide!! I don't think I have EVER seen a Gardenia that big!  Keep doing whatever is working! Maybe I'll try again - my DH eats a banana every morning! |
