RIP Bones - my big, beautiful boy

Carol, that was so funny. I was just picturing the whole thing happening. Like a movie chock full of mishaps. At least you can fix the problem now  Undecided.

JJ, I think we all get caught be surprise now and then. Hopefully, your neighbor will fix it up and it'll be good for many more winters. I'm glad you gave him a heat gun and not a propane torch. I know of too many folks that have almost burned their houses down that way.

JJ- We once had the oil lines for the heat freeze on christmas eve. The heat tape died. Luckily a neighbor worked for our oil co & they called him, We were all drinking cocoa spiked with whiskey at 3:30 am ! A hair dryer works well for oil,gas or water lines too.

Well, at least our pipes didn't freeze!  That was last winter in the old house...yup... 2 guys 2 hours and 600.00 later..did I tell you the guys just stood around while a big heater that they brought was pointed at the wrong place...2 hours into that fiasco one of the guys brought out a laser type thing that could record the temp to see where the frozen part was...all I had to say was why the he$& didn't he do that when he first got there...I threw such a gigantic hissy fit when I got the bill that they reduced it by half... Roll Eyes  Hmm...I might have posted about that when it happened...I was mad!   Cheesy

Our worst 1 was when the pump for the well went at 5 pm Christmas Eve ! You wouldn't believe how many well co's call you back on Christmas ! We were lucky that it stayed above freezing & could run a hose over from next door. DH & son & neighbors dug it up so it would be ready & the well guy came at 8 am Christmas morning. Then he was a regular at son's restaurant & went to school with DH's sister, plus his Dad had put in the original well. He took $500 off the bill. $1050 sounded great to me,I was afraid it was the well which would have been $5000-15000 !
BTW- spiked cocoa is perfect for weather & holiday disasters ! The cocoa is calming & whiskey never hurts  Wink.

Oh Carol, I just finally stopped laughing long enough to type.  Oh I could just picture the mayhem as it unfolded and the sight of you in your flip-flops outside still contending with more chaos from Murph.

A few years ago I remember getting up and using the toilet, lying back down and dozing for a few minutes then waking to an odd sound of ssppppssshhh-ssspppsshhshh-sssppppshhhh.  After a moment for my brain to engage I got up to investigate to find the value behind the toilet blew and the sound was a geyser of water hitting the wall in the bathroom.  By this time the bathroom and hallway was flooded.  This was at 1am on New Year's morning.  I decided it was a very bad omen for the new year!  Of course, I can laugh about it now,  but didn't find it funny when DH was outside in his drawers trying to turn off the water main while I trying to hold towels over the indoor geyser! Not to mention the hours of sucking up water with the wet-vac, etc., etc.Grin

Thanks for all your good thoughts. Neighbors heat tape is shot. Good thing none of the pipes burst. He is having it replaced today.

Carol laughed at your story. My neighbor doesn't drink otherwise I would have suggested a hot todie to help him warm up.

tesla I can relate to your story after I discovered a leak with a soaked bedroom rug which led me to my hot water tank. One of the lines was leaking so I tried to tape it up with towels with a bucket to catch the drippings. Well the pressure started to widen the leak opening. Upon seeing it leaking more I tried to put more towels and the line exploded with water squirting out all over. I grabbed a roll of paper towels to stop it, had to run outside in the cold. in the dark, take my skirting door off and shut the water to the whole house off to stop the leak. What an experience. Now I have a cut off on the tank itself.

Like my sister says - the joys of home ownership!

The cold weather here has burst a pipe in the mobile home park where I live. Now no one has running water. Wonder how long it will take to fix the pipe(s)? Wish I had filled up the bathtub with water so there would be water to flush the toity with. Oh well, life goes on.

You guys are making me laugh, but starting to scare me with your stories. Pretty much south western/Pacific Coast most of life.
Remember, there is a Gobi desert out here with snow for a couple inches every five or six years! Bring your flip-flops and sweaters
and come visit.

Carol, funny stories, but with a twist or two.

JJ, sure hope you get your water back soon.

May take you up on that, 3cat, if our weather doesn't start behavin' soon. Last night was 24 degrees, tomorrow there may be icing on bridges in the early morning. Not as drastic as what others have had to endure, but I'm sensitive to cold. I might have to try Leslie's method of enhancing cocoa soon! Grin

Having water is such good news (of course when it is when and where you want it!  Wink )

Wow Catbird, those pics of your snow are great, looks might familiar but for some reason we have no snow yet here, its totally strange.  Carol, it looks like the wrecking crew has paid a visit to your house, LOL  Ooopsey, I forgot, they actually live there, they didnt just pay a visit!   Wink JJ very glad you finally have water, it is so inconvenient when we dont have the stuff coming out the faucets like we are supposed to have and not so convenient when the stuff is coming out of electrical boxes like certain others have had.  And JM, I would like one of those cupcakes your husband was hoping for, if you have any left!

Ok, folks...thanks to this thread, and all the mention of frozen pipes and lines etc, it made me think to ask DH if he remembered to shut off the valve on the water pipe in the celler that goes to the outside faucet. This is the line that would be most vulnerable and he does this little maintainance every fall/winter after he drains and takes up the backyard hose. Except this year. Soooo, we did end up doing the hair dryer warmup routine, but there was no damage as there was only a little ice so farShocked
Thanks to Itchmo, this thread including JJ and JJ's neighbor with the burst pipe, and all of you with cold weather misadventures, thank you for the reminder to check the pipes just in time!

Been there numerous times, Meowli. I always figure there's more time before freeze-up and then it hits me by surprise. So far, I've been lucky. My brother installed one of those faucets that you don't have to drain in the fall at his house. I'd need to call a plumber for mine, so I still have the old kind.

Meowli so glad you were able to take care of that pipe. A former neighbors yard which flooded in front and on the side, was all due to him being so PENNY pinching that he refused to turn on his heat tape in the winter. About a dollar a month for the heat tape cost him close to $5,000.00 in repairs for damage to the inside/outside of his house.
