Thanks everybody. As bad as it sounds I didn't want to leave the house this morning.. was in tears. I am scared there and scared to not be there. Worries me more not being there..

The sad part is they don't care if you're worse off than them or not. If they want it, they take it.. for drugs, for gas, for ranking in a gang, and worse yet- cuz they're bored and cuz they can.

The fingerprint officer said that when somebody knocks or rings bell ask who is there and make sure you can dial 911. They're crashing into houses apparently when nobody answers. . I have to get a sounder installed & one to flash lights so that I know somebody is at the door or someone is breaking in. The response time makes a burglar alarm worthless. Heck, I cannot even hear mine go off and need to get an interior sounder. Maybe word will get out that there's nothing in my house. I know if I replace the computer that I cannot put the box out for trash. I have to break it down & take it to work to the dumpster.

This simply isn't anyway for anybody to live. I've had a .38 revolver before and think maybe a shot gun might be better with my lousy aim...

Offy,

Just saw what happened to you.  That's awful.  I hope the cops get the varmits.

Glad you and the kitties are OK, though.

Hugs,

Offy, your feelings are very understandable, given the situation.  I am glad that you feel comfortable sharing them here; sometimes that helps people.

Offy,
What a horrible experience!  But, I am glad that the kitties and you are okay.  Material things can be replaced, but, unfortunately, it takes a toll in one's peace of mind.  I, too, have always worried about what would happen to the cats if someone broke in while we were away.  Glad that yours stayed put and did not wander out the door.  That advice about putting fraud alerts on your credit reports is good, as is requesting new credit cards if you have used them on-line, and changing bank accounts if you bank on-line.  Identify thief is not a pleasant experience to work through.  Prayers that there will be no further problems of this sort in your future.

Oh Offy, I am so sorry to read this and am so thankful they didnt take or hurt the kitties and that they didnt get loose outside!  I would be terrified after having that happen too.  When I lived in an apt, I got those metal door jams that you slide underneath the door knob and prop in place.  Works great while you are there to give a feeling of security.

Now one question I have and Im not trying to lessen the severity of what happened to you but.....did the wakky balls get stolen?   Im guessing you hope they did......

Anyhow, please let us know how you are doing.

Sandi- That was a real tension breaker ! Grin Seriously though everyone needs to be extra careful. I live in a very safe neighborhood where multiple people are home at all hours & we've had 7 breakins in the last month. They got 1 house twice. The police think they saw something they wanted & came back. Make sure your cars are locked also & nothing valuable is showing in them. Also lock sheds & garages. The idea for backups kept elsewhere is very good. We had trouble last year with people trying to open accts after my daughters purse was stolen. The fraud alert worked great.

Oh no Offy, Not you, too. Now 3 of us and 3cats problems. what the heck is going on? and when they stole from us, i know it was probably someone who knew what We had in the building. And like all of you, we work hard for everything we have, and we sure don't have much.
If someone wanted food, clothes, etc. i would gladly give it to them. but to take my personal things and my husbands tools and such, it's just too much.
as far as the kitties, i'm so happy they are alright. I know i was terrified someone might have hurt one of mine while breaking in. That was my first concern.
But it is a violation that is so scarey. I had to talk to my ins. man again today. This whole process is taking a toll.
and I know the people who did this to us, probably only wanted to sell the stuff for drug money, etc. It's not anything they really wanted. And they didn't work for it. Damn it, we did.
Please take care of yourself. Talk to someone if you have to. you don't want to live in fear.
Poor cats, I know just how you must have felt.
I would have stayed in the house no matter how long it took to get them out, I could never leave them.
What is this world coming to?
I'm sorry, Offy, it's just not fair at all.
big [HUGS] to you and the cats.

Offy such a horrible thing to have happen. I equate it as to being violated in the most awful way. Glad your children all stayed in the house and were not harmed.

Another safety measure I just read - if you have a car alarm and it locks and unlocks the doors do not use it while out shopping, at the post office, etc. as people sit just waiting for someone to use their alarm to lock their door to shop, buy groceries, etc. and wirelessly retrieve the code on your alarm, then use it to open  your car and steal what ever is in it. Lock and unlock the doors manually with the key so no one can steal your code and the contents of your car, including what's in the trunk. Such scum among us in society they have to stoop so low to take from others.

Glad your ok - now have a glass of wine, hot chocolate, irish coffee or ? and try to relax somewhat.

Offy, I'm so glad that the kitties are OK, even though it was just your computer that was taken, it still is a terrible thing to go through.

It may be a good idea to notify any pawn shops located in your area  to keep a look out for your computer as being stolen. If the thieves try to dump it off there, the pawn shop camera's may give you a clue as to who did this to you plus you may even get your computer back.

Hugs

Offy, I'm so sorry this had to happen to you.  I'm glad you and all the kitties are OK.  It's terrifying just feeling like anyone can come into your house whenever they want.  My building has been broken into a couple of times.  Not my apartment, but 2 others in the building plus a storage/bike room.  All they used to break in was a crobar.  I remember thinking, "That's it, a crobar?  That's all it takes?"  At the time I told my husband that I didn't care about anything in our place, as long as the cats were OK.  I'm so glad yours were unharmed.

I would encourage anyone who has been the victim of a crime such as these to take advantage of victim support services, if the police department in your area has this program.  They often have handouts of helpful tips and reminders of things you may need to do (good reminders when you are in that shocked-and-can't-think state), and information on how to help yourself cope emotionally.  Sometimes there are even funds to help with the million expensive things you have to do, like putting on new doors and locks, etc.
