catwoods I know your prepared to move with your cats if need be. This storm looks a lot like Katrina only worse the way its being described and with a direct path to New Orleans. Hopefully Klondikes family is evacuating to safer places before Gustav hits. Maybe it will veer off and change direction and head back out to sea.

I join everyone in praying for those in harm's way from Gustav.  Hope everyone stays safe!  I know all too well the anxiety produced by having relatives in a threatened area since my daughter lives in Florida and has been evacuated more than once over the last number of years.  I hope, at least, that Gustav decreases in intensity, and, now, we also have to keep an eye on Hanna!   Undecided

Me, too!  We found out the relatives are either already inland or will be tomorrow except for one that has to work.

Klondike, glad to hear your relatives are already out of harm's way.
New Orleans Mayor Nagin has issued mandatory evacuation tomorrow
morning and traffic becomes one-way starting at 4:00 am.

Good luck, catwoods.  Stay safe.

I am 80 miles southwest of Houston and 20 miles inland from the gulf,
so unless the storm takes an unexpected nudge, we will be ok here.
Watching it closely, though.  Will go to Austin if need be.

ChelsandPhoebs lives in Houston, I think.

Stay safe there in Texas!  That's why I pray it fizzles out, rather than change direction.

Will be praying for ChelsandPhoebs and rom6 too and all in Texas, too. Latest info is that it's going slightly farther east, closer to New Orleans.

Did anyone see on the news about that lady that was crying coz they wouldnt let her take her birdies with her on the evac plane in New Orleans?  Supposedly TSA said they would take care of them for her until she returned...I guess she was sobbing as she boarded the plane.  I really feel for these people, all the emotional turmoil from having to evacuate and not knowing where they are going or what they will return home too.  I hope her birdies end up OK and she gets reunited with them.  It doesnt matter if they are little birdies or doggies or kitties, etc, Im sure its very hard.  I did hear they were letting people take their pets with them but maybe not on the planes?  Maybe that was just on buses?

I saw on the news that some pets were being shipped to safety in large air conditioned trucks after being tagged and bar coded to the owners. I had also heard that there were planned shelters just for pets this time around. So even though the pets and owners were separated, they were being cared for and would be reunited after the storm. That would still be hard for me to do!

Praying you and your families are safe Catwoods and Klondike.

I saw a story where members of the Missouri Humane Society were helping people get their pets tagged and into carriers for those that needed them so they would be able to take them on some of the buses.

I couldn't imagine the anxiety of leaving without my "children".

I, too, have been praying for those in the path of Gustav.  We have close friends that live on Lake Ponchatrain and they still haven't fully recovered from Katrina.

Luckily, I live far enough away from the coast in Texas that it will not effect us.  We didn't even get rain out of the last two storms that have come this way.

We are Ok - the hurricane went farther west which placed us on the very outer edges - no rain but the wind was gusting enough every few minutes to keep me offline, because it messes with the electricity. Due to problems with our file back-up system we have to be extra careful. Thank you everyone for your concern and prayers.

Now I'll be nervous until we hear from Texas members, ChelsandPhoebs, rom6, and others; and the people in still dealing with the storm, as well as those who have evacuated and and are concerned abut their homes, their pets, etc. all still need everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Sandi I feel for the lady with the birds, too.

They are reporting that the New Orleans levees have held.
