Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare By SAMANTHA GROSS, Associated Press Writer
33 minutes ago

BUSKIRK, N.Y. - A few years ago, Kathleen Breault was just another suburban grandma, driving countless hours every week, stopping for lunch at McDonald's, buying clothes at the mall, watching TV in the evenings.

That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear.

Breault cut her driving time in half. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. She began relying on a wood-burning stove.

"I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. "Devastated. Depressed. Afraid. Vulnerable. Weak. Alone. Just terrible."

Convinced the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, some people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare.

This pretty much describes my mindset right now.  I'm a long way from getting as far as they have toward self-sufficiency, but I would like to eventually be there.  I really am concerned with being so dependent on the infrastructure that will eventually collapse as oil declines, or heck if the stockmarket even crashes.

Problem with most of the more modern technologies that many survivalists & homesteaders are turning to is that they might not eventually be available either.  Batteries for bigger solar setups must be eventually replaced, & vehicles, generators, & even most oil lamps require fuel.

And then there are those pesky thiefs to deal with when no one has food except you - do you have enough ammo to take them all out?  You can make yourself crazy thinking about it too much detail, but it is good to make some kind of plan!

The only good thing about living in the country is that if we had to, only if we had to, We could shoot deer, and other things . even for the cats and dogs.
But other than that, being in the country, you are all alone and miles from everything. i guess i'd go stay with my daughter and Her husband. They are so good at this stuff. They got us through the hurricane and even had fun while doing it. And they both shoot real good.  Grin

Just wonder if this info on peak oil is all broo ha ha. With the oil under the alaskan slope and other areas how would we be out of it in a matter of years? This could be just to keep the price so high and to continue to gouge everyone while they make the money yet keep the wells that are dug capped to keep the oil off the market to make sure the price stays high. On a site I had read 2 yrs ago a barge foreman claimed that there were barges all lashed together with rope that the major oil companies had loaded up with barrels of oil and kept off the market to make sure the price stayed high and to fool people into thinking we were short on it. Who's trying to fool who here? Who would or could you believe when they all lie anyway. Let someone step up and tell the truth out there. Quit with the booga booga all the time. We are plain sick and tired of being bamboozled with your lies. There are those of us who plain and simple just dont' believe you. Tell one lie to cover up another one then another one to cover up that one and so on and so on. Enough already - be honest with us instead of the bullcwap all the time. We are not STUPID!

Good article.  I tend to agree and feel like we are headed into one of those sci fi movies.  I have my own water supply and plenty acreage to grow things in, if need be.  My ancestors didn't have all the modern day comforts that I have and, if I had to, I could survive living a "back to basics" lifestyle.

Part of using that land to grow things would entail having the old non-hybrid seeds so that each crop can produce more. Much now is hybrid.
