Does anyone have ugly, dilapidated furniture due to pets chewing, scratching, biting it?

I do.  I have one sofa and a love seat that were used as scratching posts (scratched down to the wood frame no less) by... you guessed it... my kitty!

I'd never have him declawed or change a thing!  He's my boy!!

I'll have to take a photo of my shredded sofas some time.  Hee hee hee!   Grin

Do you also have ugly furniture ruined by your pets?

I have a very unusual brown fur sofa.........however, I bought a sofa with blue denim material.  I can vacuum, brush it, use tape on it.......have a throw over part of it where Hannah curls up........it's still a brown fur sofa.

People know better than to wear nice knit pants when they come to see me! Tongue

I did have, and will have again. I buy most of My furniture at lawn sales now, so when something happenes I can buy another. My couch and chair were so bad, the threads were hanging everywhere. And the recliner i did buy got peed on, so I should have got a used one.
I tell everyone who is going to come over- i didn't child-proof My house- i cat and dog proofed it. Meaning it is a house for them, not us.

Four of my five cats are really good about not clawing the furniture.  They use the scratching posts very well, and unless they accidentally catch a claw, they don't harm the furniture.

Then there's Kalahari.

To prevent her from using the upholstery, I would have to sticky-tape the entire piece of furniture!  I've been trying for 11 years to train her not to do it.  I've never succeeded.

I have really begun to see the wisdom of furniture where the fabric coverings are replaceable.  I have a couple of chairs and an ottoman like that, and I think this is the direction I'm going the next time I get furniture.

Carpeting is another issue.  Tongue  We have a lot of it, that was in the house when we bought it.  I think my cats are trying to bring back the shag era in a few areas.

What furniture?  We sit on empty orange crates.  They make good scratching posts.  Grin Grin Grin

Discarded all the carpeting, except for one room.  Much easier to clean hardwood floors and linoleum (for us anyway).

We use a lot of metal furniture (since we both like 50s-60s look).  At least the puppies never chewed those.  Finally bought a cat tree that has real wood and carpeted platforms rather than cardboard and carpet.  It gets a LOT of use.  They love scratching on it.  They've already demolished everything else though.   Tongue

It's actually my wall that is having a problem.

I had to buy a huge paper poster frame just to lean against the wall to protect it somehow (which is now actually being used as a fort).

OMG yes! As long as it's comfortable, I'm happy. Furniture just doesn't thrill me visually. Cats on the other hand, are the beautiful things in the room. I'm sure it's the same for any species of animal(s) a person lives with.

I have also started buying most furniture used. It all has tin foil, duct tape or covers & still is shredded & hair covered. I figure I can have a beautiful home or kids & animals. Guess which 1 wins here.

I like well designed homes, and I tried to make a good compromise by providing lots of dedicated places for climbing and scratching (wall platforms and wall mounted scratchers with replacable cardboard scratching inserts, which my cats refer over rope scratchers), and when I bought the sofa I went for the cloth covered one with removable covers, and bought a good supply of replacement covers. So once cloth covering becomes too damaged, I simply replace it, and it looks as good as new.

And I agree cats are beautiful things in the room. I like it when all three line up on wall platforms in the living room, can't imagine nicer wall "decoration".

That faux suede fabric is a turn off for mine 'cause it's smooth.

Anything that is loosely woven, rough, or has nubbies, gets destroyed around here.

I have a bathroom door casing and cellar door casing problem as well.  Kitty just stretches up and starts sharpening his claws.  He's had different kinds of scratching posts, but prefers household structures more.   Grin Grin

When my previous dog was a puppy, he ate the bottom corner of a pine hutch!   Shocked  It's nice to have furniture with "character" and a pet story behind each gouge (or missing sofa leg?).

Like others, because my house is a fur factory, I tell visitors not to wear good clothing when they come or to try to wear white, gray, brown, black, or a subdued orange.   Grin

I could care less about what my furniture looks like!

alek0 has it down - use the cats as decoration!

I think some pets are just more destructive than others, and youngsters are the worst.  No carpet for me, anything that goes on the floor has to be washable, and any stuffed furniture has to have a throw of some sort.  I've had door frames carved out by kitties that prefer hard wood to fabric for scratching too.  They don't seem to like the painted frames though, so I painted them all to stop that.

5CatMom, I have the faux suede!  The good thing is that it cleans very easily.  But it doesn't stop Kalahari's scratching.  My faux suede looks like it is growing a beard in some areas--Kalahari must be determined to transform it into one of those nubby fabrics so beloved of cats.

The worst furniture mistake I ever made was to buy a wicker chair for the family room.  The cats believed I had bought them the best scratching post ever. Tongue

Thank you, petslave.  I was looking for the word "door frame" to describe where my cat was digging -- door jamb... door casing... door frame -- you know, the wood part that runs vertically!   Grin Grin Grin

My previous cat (gray tiger, huge, Maine Coon-type, but a barn kitty) refused to scratch on 3 styles of scratchers I bought and preferred a split log we brought in for the stove.  Well...       he got the split log propped up against a door to use as his scratching post for the rest of his life.  He also scratched a sofa down to the wood frame.  I reupholstered the entire sofa, and in 2 months... wouldn't you know... the wood frame was peeking through again.

So, I gave up and resigned myself to have "kitty-engraved" furniture, a new designer line with the in-vogue distressed look.   Grin Grin
