Looks like everybody is reading 5CatMom's thread.   Tongue

For some reason, it never dawned on me that so many people don't have pots and pans, utensils for cooking, or even cookbooks and are now scurrying to buy them.  This should be good for companies that make those products.

What's really a shame is those that are buying frozen veggies over fresh prob don't realize they are from Mexico or China. And those that can only afford generic, Dawg only knows what they are getting   Sad   At least they are learning to cook and hopefully as they become more aware they'll be able to use the safer ingredients with out breaking their budget. There are ways still  Smiley

Does steaming an organic spaghetti squash and pouring an organic pasta sauce out of jar all over it count as cooking?

Depends on the organic sauce   Grin  Your best bet is to buy a brand of Organic tomatoes that say product of the USA (I think that is a must be grown here under COOL) and just giving it a quick simmer with your own spices/herbs while the squash is cooking  Wink And don't forget to grate some fresh parmigiano reggiano on top when serving!

JustMe good point about pots and pans. Remeber no non-stick as the teflon flakes off and fumes from food cooking in teflon pots and pans has killed pet birds. Stoneware (unless its changed) contains lead and so when hot it will leach into the food. Glass and stainless steel seem to be safer bets. And make sure the pots and pans are made in the USA - not outsourced and then brought back here for packaging. Never can tell what might be in the metal they are made out of.

For those who do not know how to cook a cookbook I bought years ago when I did not know how to cook anything but boiled potatoes was called: The I Don't Know How To Cook Cookbook - For the bride, the bachelor and the pampered. Tells you in laymens terms even how to make toast. Taught myself how to cook from that book.

Straybaby that topping for the sauce sounds delish, ummmm!

Phew!  Oh good!  That is about all I can do in the kitchen.  That and a pot of beans.

I need to look into the book JJ recommended.  Hopefully, it is for the disinterested too.  Cooking has never been my forte.  I make messes and burn things.

Unfortunately, more care is taken for pet food than mine  Roll Eyes

I don't cook either, nor do I go out.  I just eat a variety of non-processed foods (and some pre-packaged).  Oh, well, there's time.

P.S. - calculated those coffees, hamburgers, pizzas, etc. for one month, gave it up after May, and have saved a TON of money (well, do treat myself and sis occasionally to Starbuck's).

trudy and Bridgett - you are too funny! Correction on the name of the cook book. It is: The I Never Cooked Before Cook Book and the author is Jo Coudert.
On the back of the book she wrote a lil something... The Author of this Book Assumes......That you don't know a pinch from a portion. That you are unacquainted with kitchen, cupboard, and stove. In fact, that you have never cooked before. So she spells it out for you; the fast, easy, simple shortcuts to fabulous, tasty dishes. She tells you what to buy, what to put it in and in it; and how to cook it.

If you are a noncook wobbling under a pile of cookbooks, written for cooks, throw them out. THIS is the one you need.

I will find that one.  I know home cooking is much healthier and cheaper than eating out.  I can nuke things but that is probably just as unhealthy as eating out.  Amy's is a good brand of organic nukeable dinners.

Even people who love to cook should watch, its a good way to get new ideas. There are several new "help' shows for non cookers with basic explanations of what to do also. Sandra Lee's semi homemade is also good for non cookers, after you do it with some prepared foods its easier to do it from scratch.

Do these cooking shows take you step by step or are they for people who know how to cook and might be overwhelming for those who don't really cook that much or at all. I loved to watch when I had cable(so are they shows any different now? no longer have cable)  but sometimes so many ingredients for one recipe seemed like a lot of money for all the spices, etc. if you didn't already have them. Know with everything being full of melamine you would almost just about have to buy organic spices, vanilla, chocolate and food even. Just saying for someone wanting simple, uncluttered food preparation to get it to the table, starting small then when your sure of yourself going full out to master these meals from the cooking shows if thats what it leads to.
