Lye, boric acid, industrial dyes banned as food additives in China as part of crackdown

BEIJING (AP) — Substances commonly used as industrial dyes, insecticides and drain cleaners were included on a list of illegal food additives China released Monday as part of a monthslong government crackdown aimed at improving the country's shoddy food safety record.

Nowhere does it say that these substances have been found in foods that are exported. However, adding melamine to animal feed was a "standard" practise in China. How are we to know if these substances are not being added to food imported to North America. Do our governments actually test for these ingredients?

"This list provides clues for relevant departments as they carry out this campaign," said the statement, adding that the list was not comprehensive.

Will this be the gift that keeps on giving?   Shocked

That's what worries me about any of the testing going on - baby formula, pet food and treats, milk products, etc.  They focus on the few things that have been found in the past and ignore the fact that this is a constantly moving target.

They are only focusing on the things that others have tested and reported on. If there are so many toxins just from one country in the food - why are there not more reports of toxins being found due to testing by our own agencies? Maybe they didn't know what to look for - but now they sure do. Time to get on this and test the food - not just food others have found out for them.
