Black Friday is one "tradition" that needs to die. This is enough.  Angry

I used to think, to hell with them all, if anyone chooses to subject themselves to this, they deserve what they get. And I still don't have much sympathy for mad shoppers who get injured while joining in the crush. But the workers subjected to this crap are minimum wage slaves who'd be doing something better if they could. They do it because they're young or poor or new immigrants, easily taken advantage of or can't afford to lose their jobs, and therefore don't feel comfortable saying "no, this is not safe, I will not participate in this insanity." It's time for someone to stand up and protect them. People rip on unions and sometimes rightly so, but this is the kind of thing they exist for and where they can really do some good.

I'll be doing my Christmas shopping online.

Personally, I would hold the store responsible. They knew they had long lines the day before of people waiting, they knew this waiting happens each year. Where are the security guards to keep things orderly? I hope that poor man's family sues WalMart!!

Orange Fuzball, I'm with you- the heck with the whole thing. No more black Fri.
and yes, Mary blonde, imagine the poor family. He lost his life to something that doesn't even make any sense at all. Wal Mart will have some excuse.

It's just a rotten crying shame that anyone would lose their life due to this. Just beyond sad. I hope stores will use some crowd control techniques. The one Trudy described, taking a number, sounds like it has potential to work if people will respect that system.

JJ, I feel for the people who have to work with impatient shoppers. I've done some of that, too. One person can't take care of everyone instantaneously, that's just logic. There should be patience.

I'm very disturbed by all this. It's not what Christmas is supposed to be about. Cry

catwoods I too am very bothered by this insanity of the rush to be the first to buy whatever and stomp on anyone who gets in their way. Proves that those who stomped that poor guy have no conscience either as they wanted to shop no matter what the police said. The police should have arrested all of them for disrupting a crime scene and fined each one the equivalent of what they think that poor man's life is worth - the $100 they were saving on some electronic gadget, etc. How disgusting, just so disappointing that the human race is reduced to a vultureistic mob out of control on black friday.

What angers me the most is that stores will advertise an item for an extremely low price to get 'the crowd' in the store and then only have 12 or less of said item in stock. This is what causes the stampeding at the doors. They would be better off having a drawing to buy those items. That way there would be no stampede and ALL would have a chance.

The woman who was 8 months pregnant and was trampled
has lost her baby.................

The Nassau Co. police department reviewed WalMart security procedures before Black Friday.  The police advised WalMart that more security was necessary.  WalMart did NOT listen to the NCPD's recommendation.

Burn in hell .............

The autopsy report came in on the gentleman who died.

Asphyxia from being trampled to death.
Mr. Damour was 6 foot 5 and weighed 270 pounds.

400 shoppers were at the store at 3 am......2 hours before it was to open.
No security from WalMart was on scene...........

Wow, I missed his size. I heard the cause of death. Man, if a 6'5" 270 guy doesn't have a chance . . .

My friends feel the same way about crowds as I do. The outer edge is a nice place to be.  I'm small, so I always get pushed aside. And that includes at the museum!! I have to feel comfortable with a crowd before I'll get into it. Mr. Damour weighed 2.5Xs as much as me.

Hopefully this will be a lesson for retailers and shoppers.

Target stopped doing the "early specials" last year because of all the problems. I just think its really sad that people become violent over a sale ! Black friday is supposed to be fun,not criminal. I remember a few yrs ago standing in the checkout line at Kohl's & everone was talking & laughing to while away the long wait. We would watch & move each others things,so people could continue shopping. Most fun I ever had though was last year wearing my big red "not in my cart" sticker & handing out consumers union coupons to clerks & managers. You couldn't pay me to go near a Walmart this whole past weekend though ! Oops, forgot I only go there 2x a yr for DH's work jeans anyway.

Seems to me that if Walmart was informed they needed more security and then chose to ignore those warnings, they are guilty of negligent homicide. I hope the victims of this tragedy go after them!

Now they report that the worker had no experience with crowd control, but they placed him at the door based on his size alone.
Apparently, they knew there would be alot of pushing and shoving, so why not having security present?  They report that the crowd literally knocked the doors open.  Was this poor guy the only one still standing there when it happened?  Insanity, pure insanity.
It's a true "mob mentality".  I hope the industry learns from this tragic event and makes changes that protects both the workers and the customers.  I think Target might have the right idea by stopping the "early specials", hopefully others will take note.
