http://www.ehow.com/how_5901_make-birdseed-cookies.html

Im gonna give these a try....this talks about making a garland of birdseed cookies but Im gonna try Christmas cookie cutters and hang them out with twine.  Also, instead of the butter or shortening I think I will try lard if I can find it.  And organic flour.

Instructions

Step1   Combine 2 c. flour, 1/4 c. sugar and 1/2 tsp. baking powder.
Step2   Add 1/2 c. butter or shortening.
Step3   Mix until crumbly.
Step4   Drop in two eggs - include the shells.
Step5   Knead 1/2 c. wild birdseed into the dough.
Step6   Cover with a wet dish towel and refrigerate for 4 hours.
Step7   Sprinkle flour on a rolling pin and rolling mat.
Step8   Roll out the cookie dough to about 1/4-inch thick.
Step9   Use a coffee mug or large drinking glass to cut circles in the dough.
Step10 Press a drinking straw into the center of each cookie, making a small hole. This is where you'll tie twine through to hang the cookies.
Step11 Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 325 degrees F for 10 to 13 minutes. The cookies are done when they're hard.
Step12 Cut a 3-foot piece of twine.
Step13 Tie a knot at one end and string a cookie onto it. Above that, tie another knot and string another cookie onto it.
Step14 Continue until you have a string of cookies.

Oh those sound so neat.  I think I will have to try making some as soon as things settle down a bit.  I'm certain my squirrel will be just "thrilled" that I add something new to his diet(Found him hanging from the feeder again this morning).  He doesn't come around when my sheltie, Angel, is out, she chases him away, but she's been inside lately since her arthritis has been really bothering her with the recent weather change.  My Great Pyrenees, just lazes around and could care less if the squirrel takes the whole thing for himself. These would make nice gifts for bird lovers also.

OK I made my first batch of birdseed cookies and they turned out pretty good.  The dough was a little dry so I had to add some water but they look pretty darned good.  There was a small problem in that Sophers got up on the counter and knocked the bag of birdseed over and let me tell you, birdseed in the kitchen makes a huge mess by itself but when you have a cat running thru it and scattering it all over the house, its not good.  DH is out fishing (yes, he's trying to catch a winter kind) and I think when he gets home he will faint  when he looks at the house.   Shocked  I hope the birds appreciate it all.  LOL  Oh well, off to make another batch with the other bag of birdseed!   Grin

ROFL!!  Maybe Sophers is trying to attract the birds inside the house, so that she can catch them!

LOL, well making the second batch of dough went off without a hitch, partly because Sophers is so tired she is taking a nap.  I had to chase her all over the house to get the birdseed off her paws and she thought that was great fun.  I did not.   Grin

Oh Sandi,

I could just imagine how far birdseed can roll without a cat helping play in it.  Oh I bet that was a job to clean up!  Maybe you should have just rolled the dough across the floor to roll in the birdseed and pick it up at the same time Grin  Oh, DH is lucky he was out fishing during Sophers latest escapades Grin Grin

Sandi sounds like broken glass that the tiny shards take years to get all found and picked up as they spread all over but you had help with yours, lol!
