Associated Press
FDA panel: Lower maximum daily dose of Tylenol
By MATTHEW PERRONE

ADELPHI, Md. (AP) —

The Food and Drug Administration assembled 37 experts to recommend ways to reduce deadly overdoses with acetaminophen, which is the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S. and sends 56,000 people to the emergency room annually.

Very interesting article!  Many, many people think that APAP (and other OTC drugs, for that matter) is harmless, so they keep taking more than the recommended amounts. Not the case! I think that it needs to be made clearer on those compound cold medicines that they contain APAP too, which the FDA did not recommend, according to the article.

I'd think that older people, or others whose livers work less efficiently, would be at more risk of harm.

Acetaminophen is very hard on the stomach.  If I take more than 2 "regular" pain killer pills that contain acetaminophen, I get burning in my tummy or worse.  So, I try to avoid acetaminophen whenever possible.  For some reason, I tolerate ibuprofen better - as long as it's not on an empty stomach.

cato- I have the same reaction. Do better with naproxin too. I wish they would make all cold meds with it have a large warning ! Even 2 alchoholic drinks with APAP can cause liver damage.  A lot of rx meds can too & many people take both.

I cannot use any form of acetaminophen or ibuprofen due to a medical condition, but when I used it in the past, after 2 doses I would get flank pain.  That scared the heck out of me after I looked into it.  The only pain reliever I'm allowed to use is aspirin.  Thankfully, I only need it for a rare "lack of caffeine" headache.
