Well, just to pass this along to you guys so if it happens to you ---you will know immediately it's a scam.

Two weeks ago we received a relay call-we did not know what that was-it is usually a hearing impaired person who legitimately is using an operator to read what he is typing into a computer but this is now being used by the bad guys!  We had a tandm bike for sale in our local newspaper (little paper) for $1000.00 and the caller through the operator wanted us to email him at an address he gave us.  It wasn't until the next day that we were able to do that as he wanted a picture of the bike.  The email was never able to go through so we thought we wrote it down wrong and we had no way to reach him.  Well, yesteray we got another relay call -but this time it was a different name and email -but we still at first thought it was legitimate so we emailed the picture and description of the bike and then his email came and he wanted to buy the bike immediately and will send us certified check so he needed our name, address, cell and home numbers and he also said he was going to send an overdraft check to us to cash immediately and then to pay the company who would come and pick up the bike!!!   well folks, we were tired but not stupid so we said no deal.  I wish I could paste the email here but we forwarded it to our attorney general office --it may be in the newspaper next week and I'll post a link---Just warning my fellow Itchmovians!!! Carol -
That's a new twist on an existing scam that is seen all the time when advertising an item for sale on an internet site.  Thanks for the warning.  The scam is always that they will send a check for more than the sale price and you will then send them back the difference, or pay it to some third party, etc.  The original check they send is always counterfeit and will bounce, but meanwhile you have paid out money from your account to them.  Never fall for this kind of arrangement when selling something.  Glad you didn't fall for it, Carol.

Last night I wanted to see if the email address still would work--unlike the first one he gave us so I went into my yahoo mail and sent a general---Hi and how are you ---busy here yada yada and I got a reply!  Remember the first encounter was in response to our ad for our tandem bike!!!  What I find troubling is if this was the first email and I did have pups for sale---see the "confirmation" about the message!  (his address which I don't want to show as a link is jbruce17)

His last paragraph is so heartfelt!!!!  Scumbag

In view of this I need you to email me any information that may be required to send the payment as I do not want to send the check to a wrong location lest they get into the wrong hands.
Regarding the shipping, I have a company that takes care of the pickup of my consignments for me and ship to my destination in anywhere in the U.S.A, you do not worry about shipping, the company will send down a representative to arrange the sales documentation and the pick up from your end for onward transfer to my destination.
I also want to alert you on the fact that you will be receiving an overdraft check, which will cover the money for the pickup (pickup and shipping to the final destination) as well as the money to be paid to the company that will take care of the pickup and the documentation with you. So please, as soon as you receive the payment, go and cash it immediately,
deduct the money that accrues to you, and send the balance to the Head Office of the company that handles the shipment via Western union. The check will be in your name to make it easier for you to receive payment, please reconfirm your details one more time.I will give you the details of the company that will be shipping it as soon as we seal this seal.Once the money is received by the agent , the shipping agent will contact you

That happens where I work too.  But, it is an inquiry to buy safes.

You get an email. Then you get a relay call. After quoting one of these, in email, they asked me to arrange shipping.

Now this was a $30k shipment so it was thousands for freight to the orphanages in Ghuana. Then another relay call. I told my boss that my gut says bad news. I pulled the email and yes, it was Ghuana IP buried in the Yahoo header info. So, I told them we don't do freight arrangements out of country, that they would have to make arrangements to pick up at the warehouse.
Boss wasn't happy with me to say the least. Until, I got another relay call for about the same thing. I called another company in the same business and they told me it was happening across the US. I called the organization most of the businesses join... yup, scam.

Some companies got ripped off thousands and it allegedly happened because of paying the freight arrangement with your credit card , which of course you would be adding to the invoice for the safes, and then on top of that, you would be stuck with thousands in safes that you hoped you'd sell over the next Year Sad  Their credit cards alledgedly got used for other things too.. a big mess.

We've had several relay calls and I tell the operator if it is about safes, no thanks. She gets persistent, and I get stubborn. That made me believe that the "relay operator" is a role, not reality.

The first call we thought was legitimate and when we could not get through with the email---we truly felt bad for the person---so when the second call came we were like---oh good, he's getting back to us---so initially we were just glad to be in contact with him---I have to wonder if we got hit by two completely different callers as the dumba$$ used a completely different name and did not make reference to the first call---this is new to us here in little RI---but I do know that some people suck---my daughter had that on a bumper sticker for a while!! Cheesy  and of course the eye opening of this recall and food industry is another reason why I want that same bumper sticker!!!  My husband and I thought it was kind of ironic that now he mentioned pups---this not being such a good year for us and our pups and kitties!!! I would suggest using eBay and Pay Pal. I had great success buying and selling for years.

Always check a seller's or buyer's feedback first. When selling, if you want, you can stipulate that you don't accept buyers that have negative feedback and only accept buyers that have a Pay Pal account. Also, establish communication with the seller.  If you have any questions about the item you want, email the seller first. If they don't answer in a timely basis, don't bid.

Read about eBay's Trust & Safety http://pages.ebay.com/aboutebay/trustandsafety.html

If you don't have a hearing impaired friend, why would you ever accept a relay call?  It just screams sketchy...
