I would imagine that the vast majority do come from the US, at least for fresh potatoes (we grow a lot of them right here in WI.)  But dried potato products, etc?  I'd be extremely suspicious about where they might come from.

Sharky, it's really weird that in the famous "potato state" of Idaho your potatoes come from Washington!

I'm with you catbird, I was surprised when I read that Sharky's potatoes come from Washington.  The potatoes I buy come from Idaho, go figure?

All bags of potatoes I've looked at have been clearly marked where they came from, and I don't think I've seen one from outside the US.  Not sure where the processed ones come from.

All the ones up here are from Washington, which is where I am.  Well at least they got that one right.

I was checking before I bought them last year. Most of this year's stash is from my CSA. For some reason I think we may have some coming up from countries south of the border. And I'm sure "potato products" are being imported from China. I would be in shock if they weren't.

Sharky, you may have the same thing going on in your state as CA. Export your AG to other states/countries and then import what you exported. My mom's in CA and frequently gets frustrated at some of the produce she can't find that she knows is growing there. I buy strawberries grown not far from her at points during the season that she can't get there. I buy them partly because she can't get them  Grin Grin Oh, and I also got some organic taters from your state before my CSA ones came through  Wink

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture  Smiley

www.localharvest.org  check for CSA with your zipcode.

You basically pay a set price and receive produce throughout the season. Our season was 22 weeks. June until Nov. We also did poultry and an orchard this year. I'm set until next harvest  Grin I just had pork chops (rancher upstate) with apples (orchard) with a rice dish that had brussell sprouts and such from the CSA. YUM!  I'm stocked on root veggies, squash and winter type veggies and have canned and frozen pretty much everything I need with all the other stuff. Even made soups and such with the veggies that don't store as well. Have several chickens in the freezer that were slaughtered the day we received them and have tons of apple, pear and berry compotes and sauces for the winter. Also bought dayboat seafood weekly so I'll have seafood for grilling and chowders.

This was my share a couple weeks before the season ended:

I'm in So. CA & I just checked.......says Boise, Idaho......product of the USA.  That's what I thought but I had to look to be sure.

On another thread I mentioned that I heard on the news that mandarin oranges grow here but I can't find a can/jar anywhere that is anything but product of China.  So where are the local ones going?  China?

Bah, humbug! Angry

Fresh mandarin oranges should be marked with the country.  Any canned or jarred fruits... I would suspect China, unless the company says otherwise.  During various parts of the year, even orange juice from large companies may come from the U.S. AND another country.  Is it Brazil?

If the fresh product isn't marked with country of production, I'd ask to see the produce manager.  I just found Brussels sprouts in a mesh bag that were unmarked.  The box all of the bags came in was probably marked, but that was no where in sight.  I didn't want to waste time tracking down the manager that day.  (Usually, I DO take the time to ask and have a clerk call and bother them just to keep them on their toes.)   Wink  I did NOT buy the BS, needless to say.  My poor BS never developed into tight little balls.  I'll still harvest and use them, but I certainly won't get the production I'd hoped for from 20 plants!  Sad  With the days being so short now, there's little hope of further development.

Buy local.  Buy organic.
If you ate today, thank a farmer, hopefully a small, local farmer.

Remember the thousands & thousands of pets that died to give US a wake-up call about the safety of ALL food and products.

Purr, the BS from the CSA were looser than the "commercial" ones. And some were pretty large. Still good eats  Grin  And they are keeping pretty well also. Cooking time is a bit less as they aren't as dense. Very young and fresh tasting  Wink

Bridgett, I always thought they came from Maine and Idaho.
The kids would get time off from school during digging time.  Grin
