Will the poster of comment #163768 please help us?

We need to have some food tested.  Any ideas?

If you prefer an email address, please advise.

Cross posted from Timberwolf Dakota Bison thread:

http://itchmoforums.com/dog-food-experiences-by-brand/anyone-having-problems-with-timberwolf-dakota-bison-t4434.0.html;msg81711

Just found this:

"I just got off the phone with Timberwolf CS and was told the food is peroxidizing faster than it should be.  So, the food is going bad in the bag.  They have told me that they are switching manufacturers."

Darcy 5 June 2008 - 15:06

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/195113.html

The CS reference to "peroxidizing" may mean that the fat in the food was peroxidized, i.e., "oxidized to the utmost degree, so as to form a peroxide".

Peroxidized fat can cause nausea, vomiting and liver injury (among other things).

"Going bad", or made bad from the get-go?  Apparenty, it's legal to use rancid fat in pet foods.

I wonder if rancid fat could be causing some of the problems we're currently seeing?  Someone else commented on the fat issue recently.  Was it SandiK?

This might be something for pet food testers to keep in mind.

Could this at all be something having to do with the fat and perhaps Timberwolf and Nutro have the same supplier of that ingredient?, whoever that may be? Undecided

The fat content of the food can also play a part in the peroxidation .. not just the spray-ons.

Timberwolfe is a high fat cat food .. tested at 17-19.7%

I was just reading in Strombeck's book that many pet foods have high levels of endotoxins given off by various bacteria like salmonella and e coli.  The food may not have any actual bacteria on or in the food, but the endotoxins remain after the bacteria are killed off from cooking.  They can damage the liver, cause gastroinestinal problems, and cause other diverse symptoms.

He said no PF companies test for endotoxins, and meat meal is the most suspect for having the highest amounts.  Not sure if he's talking about the generic meat meal most of us avoid in pet foods, or specific types like chicken meal.

I hope I am not off-topic here, but the endotoxin angle makes me think of the implications of gmo foods which contain the Bt endotoxin.   The same side-effects have been reported.  Just another toxin in the pet and people stew.

During the time that Don's test results weren't back yet, I commented on the fats in the Nutro thread because I had read that they are difficult to stabilize. Also, three or four different fats in pure form in one meal seems like alot to me, fats are the most complicated ("The Second Brain" by Dr. Michael Gershon) to digest. That would do my system in.
It was just an idea, a speculation for possible further research in case anyone wanted to look into it. I can't do it now myself. I have no idea if this is actually the problem.

A few other posters did mention fat related issues too.

DMS,

There's no "off topic" here.  All anecdotes, concerns, theories, comments, etc. are welcome.

Catwoods,

You may be on to something.  Thanks for bringing this up.

Poco's vet said his problems last summer could have been caused by oxidized supplements or fats in kibble we tried using as a treat.  It didn't smell quite right to me but it was a new brand so I wasn't sure.  I didn't feed much, but the vet said these oxidized chemicals can be very toxic.

Is there a way to test for oxidized chemicals?  Perhaps Don might know or someone?   Undecided
